That looks like a noble macaw. http://www.qualityexoticbirds.com/im...noble_mini.jpg

Very similar to the Hahn's, but a bit larger and has more horn on the beak.

I don't think it's a severe, the eye patch looks far too small, and has none of the 'lines' over it like severes do. Severes also have a black beak, without horn colouring. http://www.parrot-and-conure-world.c...mini-macaw.gif

Also, the "if he was treated right, he would have gone home" thing is false. A lot of times, they get very disoriented if they lose their sense of direction and can't FIND home. A noble macaw is not a common bird, like it's nominate cousin the Hahn's, not too many noble breeders about. Someone is missing that bird. Responsibly, you should put the word out that you have it.

Don't leave it in the bushes for predators to find it. Bring it inside and make sure it's safe.

There is no visible form of ID on him (her?) anywhere. I may go to a pet shop tomorrow and see if I can get an inexpensive cage for him. What size is healthy?

If they are not used to being outside they can freak out and not know how to get back home. Many parrots that accidentally get outside disappear because of this.

Yeah, maybe I will do that right now. I have a spare bathroom, I could take down the shower curtain and place the pole in the middle of the tub, minimizing the droppings in places I don't want them.

He might have been microchipped, if it is a noble macaw, not a common bird, then the owners could have microchipped him. Try find the owners first maybe through your friend in the SPCA as they might be looking for him, they might be posting ads in the paper or places. The bigger the cage the better, best if it can turn around without hitting its tail and be able to stretch its wings without hitting the cage.

Yes that would be a great idea for now, letting him calm down, then maybe after he has had something to eat you could maybe sit in there with him and see if he will eat from you to see how tame he is.
