see, I dont agree they CAN in fact care for it proper. Its great you did whats best for him anyway, I would have like to have seen them call a legit "bird rescue" and there are many in FL that would have come and got him. I see the shelter with dollar signs in there eyes. JMHO.

The lady there said the large Macaw had been suffering the same problem when he came in and she knew how to treat the problem.

Interesting...hes been there a year. She knows how to "treat" the problem? Hmmm, How do we "treat" the problem and if so how come he is still plucking himself "raw" after a year? This just gave me a giggle.

He looks like a Hahns to me if not definately a Noble.... definately NOT a conure. Well, hopefully he will get proper care and treatment. He was probably very stressed... poor little guy. If you had been closer I would have taken him in. Well Wishes!

I did not keep the bird, but took him to The Humane Society Of Pasco County. They run a no kill shelter and had several other birds there, including a Conure and a very large blue and yellow Macaw that had been there more than a year.
Animal shelters may put up an ad for a week saying that there was an animal found.. and if not claimed after one week, the animal is usually put up for adoption... thus not very long for an owner to find their pet... especially if that pet may have flown over 50 miles (if not more) to where they were found vs where they took off. At this point a bird club or rescue may have been better...

She said he was a Conure, and even knew the breed, so I guess I got that part right. Anyhow, thanks for the advice and help. I really appreciate it.
Here, I just want to bash my head against a wall!!! Macaws range in size from about 12 inches to 40 inches long (if not longer), including tail. Conures on the other hand range in size from 8 to 19 inches long, at least. That doesn't include other species which may be put under "conure" (Lexicon of Parrots) but are not really officially recognized as conures, and can be as small as 6 inches.

I hate trying to trust someone who doesn't know what they are talking about, and the woman at the humane society clearly doesn't know, if she called a macaw species a conure.

Here's a picture of 3 hahns macaws (a tad smaller than nobles but otherwise same size)

Vs a patagonian conure...

I understand that you did the best you could for your situation and for what you knew to do, and we all DO appreciate that! But knowing that you gave the bird to someone who acts like they know what they are doing/talking about when they don't does bother me... but then again it's a pet peeve of mine for people to go around saying they know what species (not breeds, that's in domesticated animals, parrots are not domesticated) so-n-so bird is, and if you know anything about parrot species then you can easily tell that's not the correct species... Although it is one thing if you've been caring for birds for months/years vs you just got into the hobby/temporarily caring for a bird when you've never done so before.

thank you for doing what you could to help the bird. many would have just left the poor thing outside to fend for himself.
