Thanks! Yep! I know the drill! This is my third found cockatiel in the past 3 years, believe it or not. ~.> In fact, I joined this site when looking for the owners of the first cockatiel I found in 2005. This one has very distinctive markings, so I am being particularly vague in the posts. The local vets, regular and exotic, have been notified and have fliers up about it. I think it was definitely someone's baby so I'm surprised that I've struck out on finding it's people so far. But as a friend of mine said, sadly, we live in a disposable society... Lose it, so, just replace it...
Take care, Mary. |

Are you a bird owner? If not it seems like you are the epitome of the bird pied pipe (a special gift!!!).
Thank you so much for trying to find the tiels owner, I know I would appreciate it if I were in that untenable situation. If you don't own a bird, maybe it would suit you as they seem to like you a lot!!! |

Unfortunately, I am not. We have 4 cats and one of them is a real killer, so having birds in our apartment is out of the question. It would be unfair to both the cats and birds... >^..^< I do love birds though. I am an animal lover through and through. I joke with my friends that we quit finding cats in need 3 years ago and started finding cockatiels instead.
My Dad's 26 year old cockatiel just died last year the day after we found our second lost cockatiel. When I was over at his house burying Pepper, he asked if he could have the cockatiel we had rescued the day before. I never did find Lester's people and he is a wild bird. To this day, I am not sure how we managed to catch him. I think it may have had something to do with his beak penetrating so deeply into my hand that he had to be pried off... ~.> Lester, has come a long way during the past year. Even though he goes nuts when I try to get him out of his cage, once he's out, he likes to snuggle in my hair and gladly accepts head scratches and kisses from me. I know it's just a little progress, but considering that my Dad is 87 and can't work with the bird, the fact that I can now give this particular bird kisses on the beak considering how he was a year ago is a huge accomplishment. Now to bore you with the third irony in my saga. A month ago while walking along the lakefront over my vacation, I heard the familiar squawking of a cockatiel. I look up and sure enough there is a stray male living in 3 weeping willow trees at the beach. I have been going down there daily since and working with him, he recognizes me and responds to me but will not come closer than 15 - 20 feet. He leads a charmed life. He eats in a sand dune restoration area directly behind the trees, and flies to the water's edge to grab a drink and a bath, and hangs out with the flocks of seagulls when he wants birdie companionship. It was while we were down there trying to lure him to come to us that someone came up to me and told me that a "white one just walked up to a guy on the pier and he has no idea what to do..." Sure enough a white one had walked up to a guy on the pier and he asked that we take the bird and try to find it's home. Said bird happily let me pick it up and put it into the knapsack we were carrying in case we managed to get the other one. I need to go back to the beach and continue my work with the other one, but I'll tell you, the thought of getting that bird only to not have it match up to any people is daunting... I don't understand what's going on this year. It is worse than the last two years that I found birds. There are SO many lost cockatiels out there, so many found cockatiels out there, but they are not matching up. It's really very sad. Okay done with my soapbox. Take care, Mary. |
