Inform them... yes

Surrender the animal to them... no

And in most states, the pound is required to hold the animal for a maximum of 2 weeks before allowing to be placed up for adoption. We will not even discuss that at that point they can deem it unfit and euthanize it.

Just how long is he to keep a bird he does not want?

How long before he can find it a wonderful forever home with someone who would cherish it completely?

Nope… still not going to say that he should NEVER sell the bird.

If he has put up posters and checked with petstores, the pounds (spca, humane assoc, rescue orgs), and the vet offices he has done all he can. If he has NOT done all these… then he needs to.

Granted, not wait forever, but surely forever doesn't equal two days? At least give any owner who has lost their bird a chance to find their companion again. Two months is more then enough time, and isn't an insurmountable time either. Its the way he stated in his origional post that he wanted a pionus and then went on two days later saying he was going to trade teh bird for one. Sounded to me like he had already made up his mind and that the bird was just a dollar sign to him...which I find very bad form indeed.

That was my point to my post... sorry I wasn't more clear... that it didn't seem like he waited long enough for the parents to find the bird and if he just posted them on that 911 site, it hasn't been there very long or given the owner a chance to find it yet.

I also have to agree with Robyn that it's not fair to the bird to be kept somewhere he isn't wanted if there is a loving home out there.

But... I really dislike it when people treat birds like things they can just sell when money gets tight.... but obviously something that is out there and I couldn't end it if I tried! LOL It breaks my heart every time I see a bird listed on CL with a cage but no toys, looking sad, dirty, and lonely. My husband tells me all the time I can't save them all... but it's a very hard thing for me to deal with.

You might also try Craigslist, but don't give all the specifics of the bird. I've noticed more and more people listing birds this way. You might also want to try Pasadena Humane Society.... they have been very helpful with people locating their birds.

If there is a local bird club, they may have an idea who lost this bird also. Instead of selling him/her, maybe the owner has posted a reward ! It would be great if he owner and the bird were reunited.
