Computer ?

I am just wondering if can uninstall Internet explorer off my computer ? I run windows XP and use either yahoo browser , crazy browser or MSN to acess internet. I hate IE and I am always getting pop ups even knows I run a pop up blocker and they all come from IE. Will this mess up the way I acess the internet or my computer if uninstalled ?

Christy,

You can uninstall it. I did and installed Mozilla Firefox instead. But then I messed that up, and now I cannot find out how to reinstall Internet Explorer (for some reason, Firefox won't work on my computer anymore). But if you want to install it and never use it again, it shouldn't affect your internet or computer.

I too have IE on my 'puter and do not use it. I use Firefox instead and am very happy with it. I have had only problems w/ IE but none so far with Firefox.

Internet explorer is required to download windows updates (try going to their site in firefox, etc...). Microsoft is trying to build their future OSs around explorer and IE. It is very very recommended to not uninstall IE. There is no great way to completely remove it. If you go to your control panel, then to add/remove programs and then in left bar click add/remove windows components, in the new box, you can uncheck internet explorer and click OK, but all that really does is removes the shortcuts to the program. Uninstalling IE for real (deleting the files) again, will prohibit you from installing windows updates, but do, let me know if you're still interested.

Kevin,

I must have uninstalled IE wrong because I still get updates. Is there anyway to reinstall it, because I want it back now, but www.microsoft.com only has the updates and service packs for it.. well, that's all I can find.

Any help is appreciated!

Have you tried running a spyware program on your computer? I run it once a week to clear out any crap that may be lurking, waiting to pop up on me when I least expect it.

Ad-aware by Lavasoft is a good one.

My main computer is a Mac running Safari web browser BUT if I used one of the PC's in my house regularly I'd definitely use FireFox. IE is the pop up King and full of who knows what kind of holes.

I use IE all the time (even if we have the netscape browser, we never use it). We simply installed Google toolbar (comes with pop-up blocker), had Ad-Aware by Lavasoft which I love, Avast (hate it.... it only finds 'virusss' when some other virus protection program is running to clear out the viruses), and Webroot Spy Sweeper (comes on a disk, so you have to buy it, but it's very good as well! It can easily do the job of Avast in protecting any new items that can possibly get onto the computer and do the job of Ad-Aware when you want it to).

With the Google Toolbar though, it has drastically removed the amount of pop-ups while web surfing, and you can even make it so that it accepts pop-ups from certain sites (such as BirdBoard) so I have no problem with IE.

You can also go to Tools on IE and turn on pop up blockers. I rarely get pop ups unless I have to engage the pop-up blocker.
