Computer Problems

I am having computer problems. My oldest daughter was here last weekend playing on it now I have several viruses that I cant get rid of. Mcaffee cleans them and as soon as I reboot they are back again. Im sick of dealing with it so I have spent most of the night & this morning burning all my pics onto CD so that I cant dump my computer and reinstall everything. Be back as soon as I can.

Before dumping, you should have tried doing a scan in safe mode. Also, you can get a virus scanner on a floppy disk that scans before windows boots, meaning that the viri have no time to startup and they are more easily destroyed. Just some knowledge for the future :-)

CKD,

Now that you have formatted your hard drive (that is what you did, right?) and reinstalled everything from the Windows operating system right on up.... do yourself a favor and forget McAffee.

Spend the 49 bucks or so for the newest version (2005) of the
Norton Internet Security program, and disable McAffee completely. It will be money very well spent.
This norton program includes spam blocking, virus scanning AND firewall security. One of the best rated programs of its type.

Blue* (who holds no stock options, I swear) :-D

I also highly recommend Norton. I have had whatever version is most current since 1996 when I first went online. Only once did a virus ever get through and frankly that was my fault. Back then, you had to download updates yourself, not automatically like now. It has always been the best buy as far as security and maintenance programs that I've used. I agree, McAfee leaves MUCH to be desired. It came with a free trial on my new computer, and I'm not at all impressed.

Norton (IMO) is a piece of crap. Not only is it a resource hog, but it actually did not score that well on the virus searching tests. Mcafee only did slightly better. The virus program known as NOD, I believe, caught 100% of viri, but its interface is not suited to the amateur user. And, to blue, Mcafee includes all that Norton includes, AND uses less resources, AND scored better on firewall tests AND scored better on spam blocking tests

I like Norton, too. So far it has caught all of the viruses trying to attack my computer and is pretty easy to use. I don't use it singley, but I would. No problems with it.

My dad uses McAfee and all of it's programs (there is like four or five) on his office computers. I'm not a huge fan of it - it takes very, very long to run a virus scan, constantly causes issues (twice he has had to call the company because his service expired, and this was the paid version). I just don't like it at all.

Sorry I can't stand Norton or McAfee. Norton costs too much and McAfee crashed my computer several years ago so I never use it anymore. I used to use AVG but now I use AntiVir which is excellent and some other things such as spybot.
