Teflon
Teflon, a product advertised as making life easy, is also used in a different form to keep stains off carpets and clothing. DuPont calls these products the housewives' best friend. Teflon and the chemicals used in its production have grown into a $2 billion-a-year industry. This includes ammonium perfluorooctanoate, known as C-8, which has been linked to cancer, organ damage and other health effects in tests on laboratory animals. In two to five minutes on a conventional stovetop, cookware coated with Teflon and other non-stick surfaces can exceed temperatures at which the coating breaks apart and emits toxic particles and gases linked to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of pet bird deaths and an unknown number of human illnesses each year, according to tests commissioned by Environmental Working Group (EWG).
In cases of "Teflon toxicosis," as the bird poisonings are called, the lungs of exposed birds hemorrhage and fill with fluid, leading to suffocation. As a result of the new data showing that non-stick surfaces reach toxic temperatures in a matter of minutes, EWG has petitioned the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to require that cookware and heated appliances bearing non-stick coatings must carry a label warning of the acute hazard the coating poses to pet birds. Additionally, EWG recommends that bird owners completely avoid cookware and heated appliances with non-stick coatings. Alternative cookware includes glass, stainless steel and cast iron, neither of which off-gases persistent pollutants that kill birds. Link: http://tuberose.com/Teflon.html

Does that mean that any Farberware product is safe to use or are the nonstick items still off limits?

It's also commonly found in irons, rice cookers, waffle irons, george foreman grills, etc. Also be aware that it could be in your oven or on an oven liner. Don't use the self-cleaning function on your oven, teflon or no.

Ok I know teflon is bad but can you use it if your birds are not near it? We have 2 and a half levels in our house, our kitchen is upstairs in the opposite side of the house, the birds are downstairs..both places are well away from any set of stairs, the kitchen has open windows and beetle is in my room so i can close the door and matches is just outside my room near a big sliding door. There are also walls to seperate the kitchen from the stairs and my room blocks matches from the stairs...would it be ok to use it then? I never have the birds out when things are cooking anyway cos i don't want them to land and burn themselves but if they are in their cages would that possibly be ok to use teflon? I'm not a big teflon wizz so I don't know.

It's okay if you're careful, the problem is when you leave a pot and forget about it on the stove - the fumes will kill all the birds in your house no matter where they are. Just get rid of it and you'll never have to worry. :)

HAHA pots are never left unsupervised LOL! When I was a bit younger I almost burnt the house down cos i left a pan on the stove for about 6 hours on high and forgot about it...paranoid about leaving the kitchen with things on the stove now...can't even go to get the phone lol, i turn it all off go get the phone and turn it on again...yeah...I'm weird.

Yeah, we had a lutino tiel who used to sneak into things...so many times she would have been killed if we hadnt noticed she was missing...someone left the fridge open one day for a minute and she climbed in there and we almost closed the door with her in there!!
