Bye-Bye Teflon

I went to the pet store Saturday to get some bird food, found a really good book- Parrots, Hand Feeding & Nursery Management by Howard Voren & Rick Jordan. I was reading the book and came to the section- Non-Pathogenie Death, whole section titled Teflon Poisoning. It says teflon coated cookware when heated releases a poisonous gas that is extremely toxic to birds.
OK, I have read all the stuff on this board about teflon, But no one said all you have to do is heat this crap up. I thought it had to smoke or catch on fire or something. Just heating it up releases poisonous gas. Good Grief!
I could not loose Jack or Stitch for something as stupid as this.
Today I went to Macey's and bought a 16 piece Stainless Steel cookware set, cast iron skillet and a cast iron baking pan. Threw out ALL my teflon pots and pans!
.......Shea

P.S.- My wife Destiney and our 4 year old daughter Bailey are at Disney World in Orlando this week (I have to stay home and work, Lucky Me!). Won't she be surprised when she gets back, and all her pots and pans are gone! I don't think she can lift the new cast iron skillet high enough to hit me with it, Too Heavy...

I'm very glad that you finally "saw the light". What people cannot get through their heads until its too late is that all Teflon degrades over time. You never know when that time has come until its too late.

We are stubborn creatures and frequently have to learn by our errors. Thank goodness the clouds rolled away in time to save your birds.

Good job, Shea.

Teflon is tricky - most companies say it has to be heated to a certain degree, but that's just not true. A lot of parrots died from Teflon pans just because they were used.

Wow, bet that was tough to throw your new pans out, at least all mine were old and ready for the trash anyway.
I don't know about the cooked meal thing, I tend to burn things on the stove. I can only cook on our backyard grill.

Shea:

The biggest problem cooks have if they haven't used stainless before is trying to fry things like eggs or pancakes in a stainless steel skillet. For that reason, I suggest you invest in a set of cast iron skillets.

You must wash them and then "season" the pans. You dry them well and then coat the entire pans with some shortening. Handles and all. Then you place them in the oven on a medium setting and let them "absorb" the fat.

Try to get into the habit of wiping the pans out with just a wet paper towel and "greasing" the insides until they turn black. That's when they are done.
A well-seasoned cast iron skillet works just like Teflon. Nothing sticks to it. When my grandmother died, instead of fighting over her gold and silver, we all fought over her skillets! They had been seasoned for over 60 years.

Sears usually has them and some places like fishing stores carry really big fry pans. They literally become family heirlooms. And, the bonus is that they aren't even expensive.

I use them and my Farberware every day and have for years. I actually gave away my Circulon. I simply like my Farberware much better.

Thumbs up

I have brought this up a number of times on this board and all I get is a bunch of people saying 'blah blah blah blah...' so I gave up. Yes ALL it has to do is be heated, ever so slightly. And if you read the article I submitted it's all about the cancers and other diseases it's causing people who use Teflon or other nonstick. I wish it could just be outlawed and be done with it, but it looks to me like it's like nuclear energy. Everyone bellyaches about the fact we have no way to contain the spent fuel rods for nuclear power, but, what the heck, lets use it anyway. My thought, simple minded as it is is, 'if we can't dispose of it safely, we have NO business using it'. Period.
