THE WILD PARROTS OF TELEGRAPH HILL by Mark Bittner (Seven Stories Press, $21.95, 225 pages) In 1974, Bittner's home was a broken-down van parked in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood. The Vancouver native lived hand-to-mouth, taking odd jobs over the years, and in the early '90s had a housecleaning job where he first saw the wild parrots in San Francisco's Telegraph Hill. He observed them, fed them and named them. Devoting so much time to the parrots, Bittner became somewhat of a tourist attraction with crowds gathering to watch him with the birds. Bittner lived alone until a documentary filmmaker arrived to capture his story. It's a charming one, complete with Bittner's Cast of Characters: photos and descriptions of the parrots of Telegraph Hill. Bittner shows slides and discusses his book, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Annie Bloom's Books, 7834 S.W. Capitol Highway.

I just got back from San Fransisco, and I wanted to go to Telegraph Hill SOOOO... bad! But...I couldn't get anyone else in my group to go :(
In hind-sight I should've just ditched out on a day and gone by myself...live and learn I guess.
I did just buy the book though...can't wait to get to actually start reading it!
