The Vancouver native lived hand-to-mouth, taking odd jobs over the years, and in the early '90s had a housecleaning job where he first saw the wild parrots in San Francisco's Telegraph Hill. He observed them, fed them and named them. Devoting so much time to the parrots, Bittner became somewhat of a tourist attraction with crowds gathering to watch him with the birds. Bittner lived alone until a documentary filmmaker arrived to capture his story. It's a charming one, complete with Bittner's Cast of Characters: photos and descriptions of the parrots of Telegraph Hill. Bittner shows slides and discusses his book, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Annie Bloom's Books, 7834 S.W.
