There was an expose on last night's news (second installment tonight) about Colorado Humane Society. I used to be a volunteer and a board member, so this was very upsetting.

According to the news report, the Society has been operating without a charitable donations license for three years. A Mercedes Benz donated to the shelter was supposed to be sold, with all money going to the animals. Instead the executive director and her husband kept the car. They showed the car with the license plate with their last name. Thousands of dollars have been donated ($60,000 for Katrina help alone) when it was illegal to accept the money.

The worst part of the story was finding dead animals in the dumpster -- several cats, a German Shepherd and a Rottweiler.

When the executive director was on camera, she denied everything. Sigh.

I've emailed the Colorado secretary of state as well as the attorney general and asked for a thorough investigation. I tried emailing the executive director but my message was returned as her mailbox was full.

I hope they're prosecuted to the fully extent of the law.

Human greed rears it's ugly head once again.

This type of thing makes it difficult for reputable non-profit groups to raise funds.

Thats horible... Last year My friend and I went and saved up over 1,000 Dollars for the cranbrook Humane Society... I hope the same thing doesn't happen there...

I think she's been there for at least ten years. I was a volunteer and board member when Anna Gold was its executive director and the shelter was a little hole in the wall. We had our problems but it was still a NO KILL shelter.

The second part of the expose was extremely disturbing. Dead animals were being pulled from the dumpster by TV investigators since July 2007, for a total of 22 animals, including a raccoon. Liver tests showed most had been euthanized. Directions for disposal of euthanized animals was clearly shown on the medicines. Wildlife will die if they eat the carcasses of euthanized animals so they must be cremated or buried deep in the ground.

Former owners of dogs that were found in the dumpster that had been turned over to the Society to be euthanized AND cremated were interviewed. One was crying when he learned his dog was in the dumpster.

There were three whistleblowers who said they were told to toss the animals in the dumpster. Yet the executive director is STILL denying any knowledge.

The Society is threatening to sue the TV station. The TV station has dropped them from their weekly adoption reports.

I'm sooooo furious. I'm so tempted to drive out there.

Yes. They're quite a large operation, with several satellite shelters, as they received a $1 million donation a few years ago. But they *are* a kill shelter.

its very sad when human greed gets in the way. Its all about what *I* deserve and I dont care who I hurt to get it. Its disgusting.
