Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

We are thinking (very seriously) of adding one of these beautiful little dogs to our family. From what I have read and got of the internet they seem perfect.

Do any of you have any knowledge of them which might help me decide? The other choice would be a black miniature poodle. i love these dogs too but my husband prefers the King Charles Spaniel

Thanks

Get the Cavalier. Its less likely to go after your bird.

That was one of my main concerns but we would ensure that they were kept separate. We have two cats already that are very scared of Worple and keep well away from him.

I have always wanted a dog and this breed seems to get on exceptionally well with other pets as well as children.

I will keep you posted as to whether we get one. At the moment if we get one we will name a girl Millie short for Camilla (ie Charles and Camilla)

They are the ONLY lap dog that appeals to me. The poodles are great, but you have to remember they were originally bred to retrieve birds. That's why they had those silly haircuts, to protect their joints while retrieving birds. The Cav's are pretty mellow.

Thanks for that.

As I have said on another english board, I have waited twelve years to get a dog. They kids are now 11 and 7 and are respectful of animals and also we were never (I felt) financially secure enough to have any extra vet bills. We are now.

We live right opposite the River Thames and have meadows at the end of our back garden that stretch for miles along the river bank. I walk the children to school every day along the towpath. I am sure this would be doggy heaven.

How weird, I just met a cav yesterday and it was very sweet. If I was a true dog person, I would love to have one. At three years old, it looked like a puppy. Just so cute. Good luck.

My mom has a cav - she really is the sweetest dog in the world. She has grown up around my birds and has zero interest in any of them - she's a big wimp. I wish I had a pic on line of her "talking" to my DYH Cuco - soooo cute!

Thanks for the picture Jen&friends that is just the cutest dog I have ever seen. She is just beautiful. I can't wait to get one now. I am glad she isn't interested in your bird. As I said previously all the animals in our house get on really well so I hope the dog will as well. Thanks again.

Jen:

She really is exceptionally pretty. I like them a lot but see very few in my area.

I have knowledge of them...and I know that they all have the same personality - sappy, friendly, and extremely sweet. Their whole demeanor is "I want to be your friend!!"

My mother-in-law had one for years, and she was the sweetest little thing, and the first dog that I (a dog hater) ever loved.
