Having 4 birds and keeping three locked away somewhere while showering time attention and affection on the other........Letting your cat run the neighborhood so that it has "freedom"....not changing water dishes, not providing clean and wholesome food, not providing what the animal needs for a happy healthy life. Not providing veterinary care. All of which are cause for concern.

Lets also not forget those animal hoarders who "insist" they are rescuing the animals. Lets face it, no one I know can successfully take care of 80 cats and 20 dogs.

All you can do is when you tell people that you have birds---don't glamourize it. Tell them the truth, sometimes they are so loud they make your ears bleed, that they bite, can be messy, take time, take money and that they require one on one time, new toys and expensive cages as well as veterinary care.

The other thing you can do is report abuse of any kind, human abuse, animal abuse---doesn't matter--it is all the same.
well said!!

Re: Bird Abuse

First, I would like to thank you for bringing up this issue that others may not be aware of and education our community.

Being a true animal lover of ALL species, it really saddens me deeply to know that there are birds and other animals who suffer each and every antagonizing day. I am so disugusted with the stories of neglect you mentioned, it makes me want to find each and one of the abusers and put them through what they are putting these beautiful beloved creatures through...to teach them a lesson they will never forget.

I am a supporter of PETA and other institutions that are doing anything and everything they possibly can to help, rehabilitate and save lifes of neglected and abused living creatures in our planet.

I am a proud owner of a Green Cheek Conure whom I absolutely love and two beautiful Cocker Spaniels (they are both rescues, one coming from an abused home). They're lives have truly changed since we've had them and they are very happy and very loved dogs; we are so blessed to have them. Our newest addition is Kiwi, our Green Cheek Conure. I love him so much, he has a wonderful personality but can be a little nippy sometimes. I have learned to respect as much as I possibly can about parrots. I'm so proud and happy to be his mommy.

I would love to get another parrot but want and need to take my time to research on what type of bird would be compatible for Kiwi...I do plan on having two separate cages, even if they are from the same species because from my understangind even if they are sibblings they can end up hurting each other if not supervised.

Any suggestions???

Thank you so much for any feedback...

I read part of the article and couldn't continue. I was so upset!!!! I had to go and get my budgie and love him up with tears in my eyes. So sad.....my little guy knows he is loved. He's happy, playful and talks constantly. Why can't these abusers just leave the birds for people that know how to look after them.

I hate people who mistreat and mishandle birds.

I volunteer at the Gabriel Foundation, and there are so many birds there. Most of them are sociable and talkative, and it makes you wonder that they must have once lived in a family home....when did these people stop caring. But they are also mostly happy babies, who have a wonderful place to get attention, good food, and love.

The story of the Keet broke my heart.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I couldn't even read the lower stories or I would become so angry and disgusted I wouldn't be able to THINK!

If I ever met any of these miscreants, these disgusting excuses for people, these festering PIMPLES on the face of society..... Let's just say the outcome would not be pretty.

Sigh, it seems more and more these days I'm ashamed to be a human.

I must say this article was very hard for me to read, and weeks after reading it I still think about this article. I've noticed that I'm much more out spoken about how it is wrong to abuse an animal and am not afraid to tell people about it.
What truly BUGS me the most is that animal abuse laws often don't include birds. I hope that everyone who reads this article becomes inspired to spread the word on proper bird care and bird abuse prevention and to set a living example to the rest of the world on how to properly care for a pet bird.

I feel so saddned by this story and the others....

I have a friend who owns a small parrot in a very small cage that looks dirty and hangs outside (most likely most of the day since this was at a party and they didn't even move the bird to a quiet room away from the loud music and crowd of people).

Keep in mind this was a party and I was there to have fun and not preach animal rights and cruelty to my friend. It looked really sad I wish I could have asked my friend if it was being taken care of right =\. I pray it is at least being given food and clean water, hopefully it can endure the other conditions and still be somewhat content.
