the REAL reason we have pets

For years, I've tried to think of a GOOD, SOLID reason what the purpose of pets are. When I was younger, I thought maybe for entertainment purposes. Now I realize how wrong that is. When you get a pet it is a LIFE LONG commitment(their life span anyway!). You don't just play with it whenever your bored. Of course, this might be okay for some people, and I mean people who chain a dog up in the yard with no food or water for weeks until they realize they haven't even looked at the animal in awhile. Or of course people who abuse and don't feed, clean out cages, etc. Another reason I came up with is for people who have disabilties, but that would only apply to them, right???
Finally, today I realized the real reason. Basically, I think animals(or pets specifically) are put on this earth to set an example for their human counterparts. They are angels in disguise dressed in furry, feathery, scaly, slimy, and finny costumes! No matter how much you try and be nice to people, some are just wired wrong. Today, I gave this girl in my bio class some anwers, and on our way out she was in the doorway so I said "Excuse me". Her response? "You are excused, b****!". WTF is her problem? I don't know if I came across as rude or maybe it was her time of the month, but if you ask me that is totally uncalled for! It made me realize, when you go out of your way to be nice to people, some people will never thank you or appreciate it. I don't know if it's just that pets can't talk, but most of the time I honestly trust my animals and any animals more then people. They simply don't judge you, they just simply give you unconditional love. It's as simple as that. When you have a bad day, you can rant to them as much as you want and they just wag their tail, chirp at you, etc. and cuddle and try and make you feel better. PEOPLE really just aren't worth it, sometimes.

I can't believe I just realized this after 14 years on earth. No wonder why I love animals so much!

LOL! I was thinking about that in P. Science this afternoon. I thought why they are here and why people have taken such a love in having them live with them. It seems we are attracted to animals and that is the perfect reason :)

Who, what, when, where, how & why.
The questions humankind strives to answer about everything and every interaction we experience. I think the last one is the one we want the answer to most but it's the hardest to for us to figure out.

There are times when we can't understand the reasons behind the actions of others. The gap it creates in our knowledge base leaves us confused and troubled. As depressing as it may sound, you'll likely find many more people like that as the decades go by. (If yer really, really, really lucky, that will be the worst though).

There are only 2 important things to remember when ya come across these folks:

1) Emotions are infectious.
If ya let her attitude win, it'll suck the joy right outta yer life.

2) The only one whose actions you can control is you.

So I'm very sorry to hear your mood was spoiled, but best to be a duck & let it slid off yer back.
Don't let the "Biatchy Betsys" get the better of ya....
Take a page from the pet's handbook -SMILE at them & Laugh.
(Besides - it ticks them off way more when ya do that!)

Star, you are such a bright young woman. I see your life path calling you.
I hope someday NJ will have yet another fantastic home grown vet in our reach......

I too like my birds more then most people. thus the reason they have been in my life for 32 years!

Yeah, I honestly think it was her time of the month because she was nasty again today. She's always been nasty to me though, I don't get why, when I help something she doesn't get I rarely ever get a "Thank you". Whatever, I have my own friends, I don't need her. Tommorow we have a field trip and sadly I think she's going! She won't ruin it for me. I have to get used to her, since I am in a special "Animal and Batonical sciences" program and I will be with her for th next 4 years of high school. Buteo, what a great post!

Lisa_B, I honestly think that is what I am aiming for. I am unsure yet, since I would feel bad when I have to put someone's beloved pet to sleep, but I think I'd be able to handle it eventually. After talking to many vets about the experience, they all say "You eventually harden to it". So maybe I'll be a vet. My main reason though, is to find a cure for arthritis in animals. LIKE a real cure, since it's killing my dog.

I think the people you meet along the way, will help you when it comes to something hard to do. I know I couldnt be a vet because I couldnt deal with people like myself...however I have a great working relationship WITH my vets and its easy to be themselves and learn in the process, because in reality, thats what vet medicine is.....everchanging and improving by the day.
We need good vets out there...we really do...as you get older, and you deal with birds a bit more, you will see the need out there for more caring and knowledgeable vets.
I really hope to hear of you someday in our state......

Shortly after I first read Jimpierce's tagline about a positive attitude I decided to give it a try.In my workday about 10% of the people I meet are crabby. When they start in I just pour sugar all over them[figuratively].It's big fun to deny them the oportunity to get to me!Try it.As for why I have pets,It gives my life purpose.
