Funny Trick

We have an old man on a bicycle coming by and setting up a live trap in the woods behind our workplace. He is trying to catch racoons to eat. People are not supposed to eat racoons ! There are shelters here where you can get a free hot meal everyday for goodness sakes. We are setting off the trap everyday so he doesn't catch anything. We played a funny trick yesterday. We brushed our dog Marley and put the fur all over the trap. She is a golden color. This will keep animals away from it. Well he came to check on it and he exclaimed "I almost got me a fox !!!" LOL, It was just tooo funny. Next we may brush our Sammy-Doo, she has black fur.....than he will probably think its a bear ! I am not quite sure what we are doing is right, but I can't stand the thought of what he is doing to the poor racoons. Hopefully he will soon get the hint and take his traps elsewhere.

...lots of people won't accept 'charity'...

...if he really needs the food, that's quite different than hunting for the pleasure of the kill...

We suspect he is selling them. I do not have a problem with people hunting for food if they plan to eat them. However, they need to hunt for the animals man is supposed to eat. Scavengers, such as the racoons have their place on this earth for a particular reason just like all other creatures.

...I have absolutely NO desire to eat racoon either...they're too cute for one thing...but isn't it commonly eaten in some areas? I'm pretty sure I've come across recipes and such...

...what we're supposed to eat is pretty subjective I've found...many people won't eat chicken because it's considered to be a scavenger...

I know of people around here that also like squirrel and armadillo....yuck ! It is a controversial type issue. The bible pretty much tells us what was put here to eat. I do not eat pork....and no I am not Jewish. It is clinically proven to be bad for you. However, alot of people do not believe in that either. What gets me is we are on a river here with plenty of fish to catch. Just seems like it would be much easier and tastier as well.

...keep in mind the bible was written 2000+ years ago...they didn't have all the information we have now...the main reason pork wasn't eaten was because of parasite transfer...

...despite health claims, fish isn't such a good meat either, flesh is often dangerously toxic depending on the pollution levels in the water...

...but I won't argue about tasty! I'm quite sure fish tastes better than racoon!

Who owns this property and is it legal to trap animals where you are located?

I understand some people do not want charity, but racoons are know to carry rabies among other things.

Depending on where you are located I would more then likely contact a wildlife officer or local offical to find out what laws govern your area. If this person is desperate enough to trap racoons for either food or money I would think this person really needs help.

A quick internet search tells me that Florida's raccoon season is year-round. So I guess as long as that two-wheeled demon has a valid hunting license and permission from the property owner he can continue to almost catch a fox.

But hey, since you're already teasing him, why not keep things interesting? Try the black hair. Try removing the bait and setting the trap off. Maybe even try putting some human hair in it, too. Or you could put a dead fish in the trap. I'd imagine that that would give him something to think about.

...sure...but if I remember correctly, you have to be bitten by a rabid animal to get rabies...and the virus doesn't tolerate high temperatures...so properly cooked meat should be fine to eat (still wouldn't want to eat it though)...

LOL Peregrine

We simply want him to go elsewhere with his trap and leave our racoons alone. Anyways these racoons are too big....the door would just shut on their back and they will wiggle out. They actually knocked it over and then ate the food. Pretty smart !
