I'm pretty lucky. My hubby paints cars using high end paint and he contacted the paint makers and there is no lead or zinc in the flat black paint that they use. The chemicals in the flat black paint aren't that much different than powder coating. I bought a used cage and my hubby sand blasted it and painted it, something he will never do again, by the way. VERY INTENSIVE work. He did a great job and the paint is doing great (Merlin doesn't chew the cage at all). Unfortunately, for someone else who doesn't have this option, it can be quite expensive and I agree with Outlaw, your costs are going to be up to buying a new cage. If the bird chews cages, even a cage painted with powdercoating can hurt them if they ingest it. The best best for a cage chewer, in my opinion, would be a stainless steel cage. Expensive but worth it.

I am not sure where you are located, but my hubby does Professional Powder Coating in every color imaginable (and he is very reasonable). If your friend needs her cage done, my husband can always give her a quote. His site is in my signature.

I would no recommend painting as it can flake and the bird can ingest the chips. That would scare me.

Volatile Organic Compounds. Those are the things that can make you sick in paints. I believe low VOC is 100 ppm.

You should bring some cards to the store - do they state powder coating for cages?

Yeppers....his Cards have it listed on there and he has a web site url too. Doug makes Specialty Bird Bells too....they are TOO cool and in the neatest Flourescent Colors. We distribute to a few local stores and of course people here on the Board.

Doug-ASS does Powder Coating on everything and just loves it. We actually may be stopping up this weekend. Do you have hours??? Let me know ok as I would love to see ya!

I told her she was crazy but maybe I'm wrong.

Any advise?

I would tell her to get the estimate for the powder-coating etc. (especially if hers' has any rust on it what-so-ever, unless she is real handy to get all the rust off herself) and then check with me to compare that cost to the cost of a brand new (choice of numerous colors btw) roomy cage for her MaCaw...... The new cage may be less expensive from Moi - especially when ya factor in gas and time etc..

Of course Stainless Steel is probably the best way to go if ya got a chewer there, as was already mentioned.
