$1200 for a Grey? The breeder where I got Sophie sells them for $750 to $850. Myself, I don't open cages in pet stores without asking first but that is no excuse for rude behavior.

I went through a simillar situation when we were looking for our baby. we drove an hr and a half away to this store. It looked real clean and nice. When we walked in the birds were out on their stands. well me being me I walked over and started talking to them(not touching). The lady who owns the store started screaming mam what are you doing you can't be there(no signs saying this). There was a velvet rope that she put up after I moved back towards Dave. She said "I geuss it isn't all your fault". How was I to know. Then she tells Dave he can hold a bird. When my daughter and I stood there by the door she saidyou can't be scared of one if you are gonna buy one". I am far from scared of birds. I was so ticked off so was our daughter. I told Dave I would not even consider us buying Rio from her.

Jimpierce, their website says 1149 *shrug* I found a few breeders selling at 950 so we will probably go threw them when we get our bird. its common in California for them to be that expensive.

Candi, wow she sounds worse then the guy I dealt with! I was talking to the store pets they had and was being flirted with by the most gorgeous green wing macaw! and the guy just looked at me all irritated. Like why isn't she yelling after I was rude to her? I don't tend to give up that easily

I am wondering if this person was the owner of the store. If it was, then I would not do business with him. If it was an employee, then I would ask to speak to the owner and tell him that employee was rude beyond necessity.
I am in Retail and as far as I am concerned, rudeness has no place there.
There definately should have been a sign up saying not to touch a bird without a saleperson being there.

I agree christie, since it has a feel of a family owned business I am concerned he may be a breeder, a manager, or just family. Not sure how the employee thing works. I looked all around the store before touching the birds or cages no signs what so ever. Only one saying they aren't responsible if a bird bites you -- understandable!

buying from a breeder--not something I would have expected from you, LadyChaos. I have to say that I am disappointed.

*shrug* I haven't thought about it until I actually started searching. I looked on petfinder. The only greys they have are either waaaay far away and don't adopt out to other states and they want you to attend a week long class. I cannot fly out to a different state pay for a motel to stay a week and not take care of my cat and dog. I also cannot adopt the poor blind older one who hates cats. I am not buying for another few months to years until I know we are comfortable enough to know we can properly care for a grey. We might obtain one from a man trying to rehome his grey. But would that be any better? Look around in my area, the only available greys are threw classified ads. If I can find a responsible breeder in CA and there are no available rescued greys I personally do not see a problem.

I don't think there is anything wrong with a breeder, especially if you don't have any species you would like in your area. It's no reason to be ashamed or make someone feel bad. Do what is best for you and your family and situation

Mlewis, me personally I believe in responsible breeders. I have all rescue animals with the exception of my budgie who was a bird bin picked out by my boyfriend. But I do not believe in breeding cats or dogs except responsible show breeders or responsible breeders in general. There is a massive cat and dog overpopulation problem. My dog and cat are both from the same shelter (cat is from a rescue actually). But I guess buying a bird from a breeder makes me a hypocrite because I do not believe in backyard breeders breeding dogs over and over and selling pups for profit. But that's okay, I don't feel guilty because I searched rescues. And I haven't even decided on where to go yet by the time I actually do buy there may be a bird in a rescue that is perfect for me. But it all depends on the situation.

Trust me, I know about animal overpopulation. My dogs are rescues. Do whats best for you, whether you believe in breeding or not.
