What does everyone do for a living??
Hello all,
I was just wondering this because I recently graduated from college and moved and I am having such a hard time adjusting. I just got a job teaching English at a middle school and am trying to figure out what in the heck I am doing! I am gone for at least ten hours a day and I am so exhausted!! I know this may sound like I am lazy and spoiled-maybe I am- but I just hate being away from my apartment so much. I miss my bird and my family and I feel bad for leaving my cockatiel alone so much. When i was in college I could spend so much time with him and I had a lot of time to do things that I loved like write. I am just not sure if the 9-5 life is for me.. I am a bit of a free spirit and what I would really like to do is stay at home and write write write and be with my bird. I would like to get more birds and have a whole fid family but all that seems impossible now. I guess I am just venting. Do any of you guys have a hard time being away from home so much for work??? Thanks for reading my rant :)

I am a graduate student. The job is more of a 7 am to 12 am kind of job (then you think about it all night long while in bed). But you can work a lot of the time from home. And I certainly write, write, write!

Well... I was thinking about Graduate School... but I am already thousands of dollars in debt from undergrad so we will see. I can certainly see how being a graduate student would be completely consuming.. I just miss being at home. :(

For a living? I'm a web application programmer and web designer (at least for the last 7 years I have been) for the State of Montana (government working 8-5 M-F), before that I was Military and Technological Counter Intelligence Officer in the US Army Special Intelligence Division, Capt.. I've also owned my own computer shop for over 15 years now.
I graduated college in 1997 with a masters in Computer Science and a minor in Micro Electronics Engineering and a secondary in Mathmatics. Luckily I have no debt from College as the Comp Science degree was required for my MOS (Miliatry Operations Specialty) so every dime was paid for by them. I still have the entire GI Bill for me to spend... hmmm... I should look at school again just to get into something else for fun... like carpentry. Then I could make use of all the tools I had a fetish on buying my entire life. Some are still in their original boxes never opened (been sitting there for at least 3 years). Some I have used though, but not as much as I'd like. Maybe if the shop were heated I'd be out there now. Currently not married, but she's been living with me for over 8 years now so I think that means we're married by some law out there. She basically spend the second night of our relationship here... and never left. (What the hell?) :p I can joke about that now as she's at work and can't stop me from posting (I took the week off due to having excessive vacation accumulated (over 8 weeks worth), she works for the Department of Labor - State of Montana. 33 Years old, 230K+ in debt (home owners you know what that's like), 07 car, 07 truck, 03 boat, time share condo in Orlando Florida (anyone want to buy it?) and father to four fids. NO kids for me, I just am too selfish with "my" money. I do spoil my fids rotten though ($100's a month on them). Have two fish tanks one 90 gallon marine tank and one 75 gallon fresh water tank. (Fish are expensive considering their typical life span). There, you have a short bio on me.... :P Somewhere around here is a pic of me and my fids... but I won't share where.... LOL.

Prior to September 5, 2007 I was a Sales & Marketing manager. I ran, ran, and ran EVERYTHING! Sales and Marketing is one of those jobs that never end. You take them home with you. Even when you are out eating dinner with family, if you see a prospective client you'll feel the need to grab their business. After all, your salary bonuses depended on it. Then, add to that the fact that I managed a staff of 15 and basically ran a operation. My phone rang 24/7. Sometimes I'd get calls at 5 am in the morning on my days off. I was pretty much gone for the most part of the day and it really started to take a toll on the well being of my life. What I did like about the company I worked for, they understood and accepted my love for my animals. I raised a litter of pups in my office, as I certainly wouldn't have left them home alone. That's right, I carried them to work every single day for the first two months of their lives. Every now and then I would get depressed because I was away from home so much. I didn't feel that it was fair to my kids (dogs). So, to ease my mind a little I started rotating--I would and was allowed to bring my babies to work with me. I would do a week on and two weeks off with the pets coming to work. Oh, my General manager absolutely loved it. I couldn't get HER to do any work when the puppies came into work with me and she was MY manager. I included a picture that was taken by MY manager with the company's mascot (in a stuffed animal form) and put into our company newsletter. She took this picture while she should have been working. I was known as the pet lady and whenever someone from corporate would come into town the first thing that they'd ask me was how was the dogs doing. See, they were very well aware of my kids as well because I was the worker that always had to have the pet friendly hotels when corporate paid for my business trips. I got my first parrot when I finally saw a break in my schedule, after being allowed to hire an assistant. Iris (my CAG) came to work with me for the first couple weeks after I obtained her. However, I would alternate the days so that she could also learn how to be alone. Anyways, we had a reduction in force and my local venue was closed down. Although we all were then without a job, I was a little relieved because I didn't know how much longer I could go on without having a life.
After that, I had a decision to make and I decided not to ever dedicate so much of myself to anything that takes me from what I'd most enjoy doing and that's being with my babies, as they deserve. I then decided to go into business for myself. Thus far, it's working out just fine and is paying the bills. I wish I would have done this long ago. I now have more freedom over my OWN time. I spend more time at home now but sometimes it does feel redundant.

I'm a receptionist at an X-Ray and Ultrasound Clinic. My boss is awesome though so if I need to get something done I just need to tell him and I can go do it. I work 8:30-5 but if it's a slow day we sometimes close half an hour early :) P.S. Nazir...Your dogs are so cute.

Where do I begin...
I'm an accountant with 28 years experience and for the last 10 years have been working in the reinsurance industry...God I'm getting old, I'm a 42 year old animal mom. Doing quarterly and year end closes at work have taken their toll on me. Normal working hrs are 9-5 M-F, during a close it's 8-11..sometimes 12 or 1, this goes on for three weeks straight. Last year I got a gift from God, the company I work for had done a merger and decided to keep all employees in Kansas City and give everyone in NY packages. My last day was supposed to be 12/21/07. After several weeks of neg. the company agreed to pay me out on my package and hire me back as an consultant with a great hourly rate. I've also been approached at staying until the end of 2008 because of a migration issue they have. Nice to feel wanted :-) My goal for this year is to not work as many hours as I have been and to spend more time with my hubby and fids. I also plan on applying for my 501c3 this month (Jan 08), and getting my bird rescue off the ground. My husband is a trader and works many hours during the week so the fids are all mine :-) Jeanne
