I don't recall ever getting the chance to see one, but I do remember meeting someone on another forum that bought one as a pet. As they said though, not all states require a permit...

In the least bit, there is one for sale on Avian Biotech for $1,800, as well as two pairs priced at $3,800, and $4,000. There's also another one for $1,600...

From the sound of it, yes they are expensive birds, but even more rare to find an unrelated pair so pairs often times sell for more...

I believe there was a breeder in S. Carolina, but I think she's retired from the business. Dr. O and I were talking about this the other day. She had mentioned that you need a wildlife rehabilitators license or something like that in order to have one here in Ohio.

Someone here locally was recently given a pair, and had no idea what he had. He posted their pix here on CL, and I was able to ID them for him. Can you believe how some people have ALL the luck? LOL! He asked how rare they are.... I haven't seen them listed for sale, so hopefully he did his research and is giving them a good home.

They are such gorgeous birds, I don't think I have ever seen a picture of birds so pretty.
And your right Tara, I think we will see some in Australia about the time we start seeing Tasmanian tigers roaming the woods again. :(

My Dream Bird. I was lucky enough to hold one at a local bird show this past August. $1,800.00 they were asking for him/her. Also at Busch Gardens they have a breeding program to help bring the numbers back.

I actually saw those posted for sale. I emailed them asking how much they wanted but never heard anything back. They said they wanted them to go to a good home. I told them I would be willing to do that but never heard anything back.

They are beautiful birds and I would love one some day, but thats after my hyacinth LOL

Ahh... well, once he found out they were valuable, I guess making the buck was more important to him. Probably just as well, if they went to a knowledgeable and reputable breeder. I think they're pretty, but I think Suns are prettier, if common. I'm much more interested in someday having my Hy! Spending every day of the week with the Hut's baby boy makes me love them more and more every day. Especially that particular, already-sold baby....

Given the beauty between the goldens, suns, and jendays, then on top of that the goldens great temperment (that they are said to have), as well as a lower pitched voice, I think I'd go with a golden any day! I find them truely unique conures, up there with the patties!

I'm with you, Monica -- There is something special about the golden conures, IMHO. That's not to say that I don't think that suns and jendays aren't as beautiful, though!

Patagonians... well, maybe if I move out NJ...

My old neighbor has one - he named her "Goldie" she is the sweetest and boldest little bird I ever met - he also has an Umbrella Too and B&G - Goldie had no problem holding her own with them. Her favorite place to hang out was either on the top of your head or at the back of your neck underneath your hair.

The Golden Cockatoo in Florida usually has a couple of them at their store so I get to visit with those also - if you go to their website they have pictures - they're selling them for around $3,000 but I believe you need to get a special permit to take them out of Florida.
