I'm sorry, but I think that PETA is really out of control. You can do lots of good deeds and NEVER be associated with those lunatics. I do every single day.

Oh wow guys :( I feel very sad.
I didn’t realize how much people disrespect PETA…I guess I’ll have to do more research before sending any hard earned money. I do like WWF (World Wildlife Fund- not the wrestling!), Sierra Club, the Australian Koala Foundation (I volunteered there for a while Tiki ;)), Humane Society and of course Riddles Elephant Sanctuary. I always thought I was doing good by supporting an organization that believes in ethical animal treatment. I certainly am not trying to aggravate any bird board members, and I agree that Peta’s approach turns people off and could be very offensive. I am not that way, and I don’t want to be associated with that. I know PETA are extreme at times (but I attributed that to a few lunatic members), but from the sounds of these posts, it sounds as if they consistently cross the boundaries. I guess I really didn’t see any bad behavior of PETA in MN, I’ve never seen any of the billboards, and it’s never reported on the news of PETA actions elsewhere. So I’d be curious about seeing the other side of it. I do not wish to support bad people, but do like to help animals in need (hence the questions that follow this post). I originally joined PETA to get the free book of company listings –which cosmetic companies test on animals, and which do not. Personally, I do like how they expose and bring awareness to certain issues (such as the two year old lion in the Ringling Bros circus train that died in the 109 degree heat because apparently it didn't have water, etc.)….The reason I like these sorts of things exposed is so that I can write letters and hopefully make a change for the better. PETA has brought the issues to my attention. SO! The purpose of this post is the following: 1. What animal shelters, organizations, or rescues are reputable and worthy of our funding? Any Avian ones in particular would be interesting to know, because there are a lot online! 2. Where can I find out about cases of abuse of animals so that I can help by joining letter writing campaigns etc? I find out about the bird ones here, because people post links and organize our own action network. But, does anyone belong to some sort of “action alert” that includes a wider spectrum of animals? Taking action with letter writing makes me feel like I’m doing something, even if Im pressed for time. Thanks! Stacey (and bindy of course) |
