What do you think of free hosting

I was just tossing ideas around, and I thought of something:

Free hosting for your website - BirdBoard would give you X MB webspace to upload your pictures & allow you to make your own pages.....link would be something like either hosted.birdboard.com or birdboard.com/hosted/~user

Yes or no?

I think you will get many takers on that one if it is truely free. I know that I would be interested for sure.

Right...I just you know see users hosted by geocities or lycos, and the ads are just horrific. I thought that a lot of people could use something like that, so I will start looking tinto solutions.

That's the one that I like most so far. It allows you to signup and then when you do, it gives you a subdomain (yoursite.theirsite.com). Now what I'd like to be able to do is something exactly like that, but make it so that when you signup for Birdboard, you automatically get your subdomain created with the forum password, etc......I just posted on phpbb seeing if anyone wants to code it. :-)

If this happens, it'll be awhile.

I think it's an awesome idea
However (and please no one yell at me) why don't you charge a small fee and try to recoup some of the costs of administration, getting the hard drive (not) fixed, etc. I would pay a small fee to have an ad free site.

I was thinking more along the lines of

Free has google banner maybe, and you could pay (a minute amount) to get bannerless hosting. No popups or anything, just google ads. But yes, we need to recover some of our losses.

Since everyone is so :-) about this, maybe I'll talk to keev about it.

Well me and kevin have talked about it and consider it a done deal... I have invested much more than this feature and if people are willing to help along the road i am all game... give us about a month to release a couple new things to everyone...
