Mazuri Parrot Pellets

I was wondering if anyone has tried Mazuri Parrot Maintenance (www.mazuri.com)? I was recently introduced to their foods. They manufacture all types of foods for many exotic animal species. From what I understand, they also sell their products to zoos. Their prices are great (25lb bag of food for $25-$32.03 depending on where you purchase it) and it has been a big hit with all the birds here. Our birds eat a variety of foods plus pellets. Anyone know of any down falls to feeding this diet. What were your likes and dislikes?

When I was experimenting with all of the major pellets, I did try Mazuri. It was actually recommended by a vet because it had an ingredient that others didn't have and was supposed to be good for birds that plucked.

My birds are fed a totally fresh diet and really didn't care for it or any of the others I tried. If all things are equal, I'd say its as good as most of the others and a lot less expensive. The ONLY pellets I would avoid like the plague and NEVER feed under any circumstances are Pretty Bird. Total junk.

Just out of curiosity - why do you consider Pretty Bird as junk?

Thanks Outlaw for the feedback. I've never read any postings on the boards about this food. Seems to be going well here.

The main thing I see about Mazuri that I wouldn't like is it is intended to be a complete diet by itself and the addition of fruits and veggies are supposed to be kept to a minimum.

That's true of ALL pellets. Pretty Bird has too much junk. Just read the label. And, they were linked to a lot of dead baby birds years ago with their baby bird formula. I started my Ekkie on their Eclectus special diet and she started plucking on the 14th day. Never again.

I checked into Mazuri pellets, and asked if they gave out any samples... They said that they don't but if you buy from a dealership and your birds don't take to the pellets, that the bag can be returned to the dealer and get a full refund. If you buy the pellets over the internet, then they will refund all money (once the bag is returned to warehouse) except for shipping costs.

Frankly, it sounds something that is good to look into, and other than no refund on shipping costs, it can be a win-win situation either way, so to speak.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I also thought it seemed to be a pretty good brand as long as fruits and veggies are fed in conjunction with the pellets. I also liked the fact that large birds such as macaws clear down to conures can all eat the same pellet due to the size. Plus their prices are so much better than the other brands. Here in Butte, Montana there are only two places that sell bird pellets. A bag of Zupreme cost around $15.00. So, I'm really glad to find a less expensive solution to feeding a large number of birds. Thanks all!

And that's a 3lb bag of Zupreme that cost $15.00....wayy too much for the amount of birds we have.

A 20 pound bad of Zupreem here in Maryland is about $40. You should really consider buying in bulk if you plan on feeding on a regular basis. Sometimes, if you talk to your local feed stores, they will consider stocking parrot foods. My local Farmer's Co Op does stock Zupreem and Sun Seed. I don't care either, so I don't buy them there, but its a start! If you can get them to stock parrot foods, you can save a ton on shipping. Give them a call! You can't be the only parrot owner in Montana. After all, you've got Big Skies!
