The Peregrine Falcon is called the fastest bird in the air (one was clocked at 244mph), but their true high speed glory is only during a hunting "stoop" and not during true powered flight. greencinacheeks is correct that the Spinetailed Swift is faster under level powered flight. Sure the falcon's 244+MPH wins the gold in the "fastest thing in the air" category, but IMHO, it wins on a technicality. That's like saying geese are 100MPH birds. It's true, but only under very specific circumstances. Lots of private and commercial chartered flights have reported different species of geese doing around 100mph when they're migrating,.... but only when they hit the certain air currents. Each environment has a leader, but even each creature type has it's champions. The Cheetah is the fastest running animal on land at 60+mph, but if you took size out of the equation, those cats would get beat by a bug. The Japanese Tiger Beetle is so quick, it would blow the spots off a Cheetah. I believe I read somewhere that at scale, the Tiger Beetle runs at well over 350mph. It actually runs faster than it's "brain" can process what it's eyes are seeing and it has to keep stopping every so often so to get it's bearings.
