I bought a ton of Pomegranets, because they are in season and because I mix the seeds in with the bird's food in the morning. I tend to clean them and then mix them into the food and I keep telling myself that these are for the birds, not for me. However...

1/2 hour later...

Oh, they won't miss just one handful of these... and I do need the antioxidents. Lots of them. Because it's flu season and because I need to be healthy enough to take care of the birds...

1 hour later...

Well, I might as well clean two of them - it's good to have more on hand just in case. They won't miss another handful of seeds from the tupperware after I clean a few more. Heck, I'm not sure how many they eat as opposed to just playing with them and turning their cages red with juice

1 hour after that...

Might as well clean all of them and just put the seeds in a big bowl. And I guess if I clean all of them, I could make sure that the seeds don't overflow the bowl...

2 hours later

This is an addiction, right? Do they make a 12-Step program for pomegranete abuse? And Ira is looking at me from the perch like 'you've just eaten my morning fruit serving, you tart' and I feel guilt in the pit of my stomach, where it joins at least four pomegranetes worth of seeds.

So it's off to the store for more pomegranetes...

Great story! Its true, I eat Darwin's food too :) But why not, it IS expensive and it is good! I find myself buying the unsulfured mango for him and then I eat it!

And all I can say about pomegranate is...MMMMMMMMM!

Aren't pomegranates great? One of my Greys, Hansel, readily eats them. But it's an issue with my other birds.

Don't get sticker shock when you go into the grocery store! They're no longer on sale for $1 each.

Unfortunately there was a Gretel. She succumbed to PDD back in the 90s.

I should rename him Rambo or Ali. I would never trust putting another hen with him. For a wild-caught (with the appropriate band to prove it), former breeder, he has no fear and trills at me all the time when I walk in the room. He pins his eyes and probably would love to take a chunk out of my cheek.

But he's a gorgeous bird and recently started accepting toys. When I give him a roll of calculator tape, I don't have to worry about him for hours! He's a good eater too -- flinging that pomegrante juice all over the room!

I wish I felt comfortable working with him.

Produce in Colorado, save for things like Olathe sweet corn, Western slope peaches and Rocky Ford cantaloupes, has always been pricey, even for the run of the mill things. One of my coworkers, from Arizona, has sticker shock when she saw the price of fruit. I countered that orange and tangerine trees don't do so well here and that fruit trees in the backyard aren't all that common anymore - too dry these days. Apples here are regularly $2.00 a lb. I'm sure that things are more expensive on the coasts, but when adjusted for wages out here, things like pomegranetes have always been on the expensive side. since they are seasonal berries (a fall and winter fruit), the season is just about ending. I bought about twelve of them the other night and fed the boys some this morning. Of course, now mangos are here for a buck, so it may be time to buy a bunch and freeze them for future use.

I will say that while the seeds are great, the juice isn't something you should give your bird alot of. Trust me on this. I gave Bob a taste of my blueberry/pomegranete/white grape juice the other day and I was washing walls for a day and a half.
