I'm not ever going to feel guilty about being human and eating meat/fish. How many of you still eat chicken, and by now in 2008 we have ALL seen the "PETA" type videos of how livestock is treated. Keep in mind that most other countries have even more lax policies when it comes to livestock AND ANIMAL TESTING. Since you brought up Japan, they are notorious for slaughtering whales!

Again, not gonna feel guilty, ever. Just because I love pet animals does not mean I have to be vegan or some bleeding heart.

Don't take this as offensive it's just my opinion.

No offense taken. We know it's your opinion. I don't know how true this is, but years ago, I read that the human digestive tract is not meant for digesting meat. It's just not long enough! Having said that, I firmly believe that eating meat is a main contributor to the development of cancer.

I know we'll all die of something, so we may as well be happy while we're alive, but .... if we could be just a little more responsible for our own bodies, we'd be helping our fellow animal citizens of earth as well.

personal choices aside - I'm shocked by the fact that humanity still doesn't seem to be able to establish and REINFORCE decent animal rights.... i don't even want to discuss the transportation of animal livestock through Europe *grrrrr*
however, i also don't see many organization targeting mainly that (I'm not a PETA fan for multiple reasons though I think some stuff is good). i'd be a full supporter of such an organization

I just made about 200 pieces of sushi tonight! I used octopus, squid, salmon, smoked salmon, roasted eel, crab, and clam muscles. Deeeeelicious.

I don't think that part about the human digestive tract not being long enough is true. The small intestine is about 8 times our body length, and in carnivores like cats and dogs it's only about 3 1/2 times as long. Horses' small intestine is about 12 times their body length, so we're about in the middle, supporting that we are omnivores. Our digestive tract doesn't need to be long since animal protein breaks down pretty quickly, especially compared to plant cellulose, which we can't even digest at all.

Being an omnivore just sounds like smart evolution to me! Our digestive system probably evolved to support the digestion of meat and plants, making it easier for us to survive.

Probably the only way to stop the treatment of livestock would be to cut down on the human population. If for 100 years every couple was only allowed one child, the population could be cut in half, and maybe we could focus on quality instead of quantity.

Anyways, the eel sushi I made was probably the best. I used roasted eel, crab meat and cucumber with a tiny bit of wasabi on the inside. Tasty with a gentle punch in the middle!

Eel is my favorite. Sigh. Do you put sesame seeds on top?

I think these days there are enough products and supplements on the market to keep you healthy if you are vegan. Hopefully! I worry about my friends who go through "vegan" or vegetarian phases. They seem to use it as an excuse to live off junk food.

As long as you get enough vitamins and protein you will be fine. But to say the human body isn't mean to eat meat and meat causes cancer is ridiculous, I'd love to see an (unbiased) source for that... I know that eating red meat every day of you life may lead to colon cancer, but that is hardly reason enough to ban ALL meat FOREVER and become vegan.

Homo sapiens (people) are omnivores and we are on top of the food chain. I don't think we should feel bad for eating what we need. Should a tiger feel bad for killing a deer or whatever it is they eat?

That said, I do hope someday to have enough land to have a mini-farm and raise all my own meat. I would be eating only chickens and goats. That is a fantasy of mine that probably won't ever come true.

If I'm not mistaken Syoransbear, you are a young person? What I'd like to know is how you became so wise?Over population is at the root of all the environmental evils of or time.Until man gets that through their thick skulls,we are treating symptoms instead of healing our planet.

I attended a book signing at the Tattered Cover (downtown Denver, Colorado) on Saturday. Dr Marc Beckoff is a biologist and a professor emeritis at the University of Colorado-Boulder. He's authored or edited over 20 books on animal welfare and has teamed up numerous times with Dr Jane Goodall.

He said the one thing everyone can do to make a difference, both for the environment and for animal welfare, is to cut back on eating meat. For example, he said, if you eat five cheeseburgers every week, cut back to three, then cut back to one. Not only would you be helping the environment but you'd be sending a message to animal factories. He said that nearly 1,000 animals are slaughtered for human consumption every SECOND of every day.

I went Vegetarian for about 4 years.. I even bought products that had no animal products in it (Cruelty free). Needless to say I went broke because it's all so expensive and vegetarian foods can also be up there in price.

Then I started getting sick all the time, I learned that not all bodies are made to give up meats and animal proteins.

Did you all know that if you went vegan you have to stop eating jello?? It has some kind of product from the hoof in it.

I still eat come vegetarian things, I love to cook tofu and I got my husband into Humus. He had never eaten before, now he buys it all the time.

Now onto the topic of Sushi. We don't have a good sushi place here, we usually eat it when we go to Amarillo. There is a Teppanyaki place that makes the most awesome sushi and we just pig out when we go. It's really a treat for us. We do like to have a Japanese night where we got out and get fresh made sushi rolls from the store (They had a sushi bar in it that'll make it for you although not like what we eat in Amarillo), some edamame and other things and had a really good dinner. I must not forget that we also get a bottle of Saki.
