Sushi

I absolutely love sushi. It's one of my favorite foods. Yes, I know where sushi comes from but a story on 60 Minutes tonight may stop me from eating maguro forever!

60 Minutes showed the blue fin tuna swimming in huge schools. I mean HUGE schools, heading towards their death in nets layed down by the Japanese fishermen. Thousands killed within minutes. All because humans love sushi.

I'm so angry with myself.

I am a vegetarian but I don't have moral issues with eating meat or fish. I am a Christian so I cannot have moral issues with meat eating because it's all over the place in the bible. However, I quit eating meat not because of I have issues with eating animals but with how we treat the animals in the slaughter or even the lives we force them to live that I take issue with. For instance, I eat eggs but I only eat eggs that are from chickens that are cage free and free roaming. I can't bear to line the pockets of those that force chickens to live in a cage so small that they can't even turn around. If that was all tha was available, I would quit eating eggs.

So I understand your issue with sushi. Nothing wrong with eating sushi but it's how we obtain it that can be an issue.

The only thing left to eat...

I think, if folks were to stop eating every food that came with some kind of nutritional, environmental and/or ethical problem attached, we'd be down to one food and one food only:

Lentils.

Really, I think that the only foodstuff out there that everyone can agree has nothing troubling attached to it is a big 'ol pot of lentils. Milk, meat, apples, grapes, corn, pork, bags of spinach... the rest of it comes with baggage. Only lentils seem to be free of anything that could be considered controversial. Of course, lentils tend to be about exciting as... well lentils, which really don't have the same 'WOW' factor associated with a triple fudge sundae or a Whopper with cheese and a cherry Coca Cola. Or sushi.

It isn't just sushi. It's tuna for those wonderful cans on the pantry shelf labeled 'Dolphin Safe' and for tuna steaks and such. We are overfishing, plain and simple. Too many humans consuming too much for reasons other than sustanance. Unfortunately, it will catch up with us, but not before we send countless species into extinction because we crave the new and the different.

Again, not to be too much of a downer, but I think the Almighty (or whatever idiot decided to give the hairless land apes the opposable thumbs and the overactive frontal lobes) would have been better off giving those attributes to the dolphins.

Perhaps, in some alternate reality, this is the case and the dolphin's version of what constitutes 'sushi' might be just a little too close to home for comfort.

*goes off to contemplate plot for new short science fiction story and to start pot of lentil soup for tomorrow*

i think they talked about that in the docu too, but they're not doing it YET.... currently, they're "only" fattening the fish under farm-like conditions

I'm a sushi lover too and don't plan on avoiding tuna's - atleast specific types of tunas just yet.

If you want to be environmentally aware and be responsible for the type of seafood you consume, try checking this site out. It tells you which fish are ok to eat and which ones to avoid due to various environmental concerns.

I've always envied the lives of vegans but I hate lentils. Years ago, I was a vegetarian (not a vegan) for about 15 years. I"m too embarrassed to tell anyone why I jumped off the wagon and started eating flesh again, so don't ask. (But it has nothing to do with parrots!)

If we truly wanted to avoid anything made from animal remains, we wouldn't be able to drive as tires have animal ingredients. The road the car traverses on has animal products in its ingredients. Everything we touch, everything we look at, has former life as part of its construction.

That WOULD be an interesting science fiction story! Imagine if dolphins were the dominating species on earth! I'll tell you this -- the world wouldn't be in the trouble it is now if they ruled the world. Sigh.
