Each year the staff at Beloit College in Wisconsin puts together a list to try to give the faculty a sense of the mindset of this year's incoming freshmen. Here's this year's list: The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1989. They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up. Their lifetime has always included AIDS. Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic. The CD was introduced the year they were born. They have always had an answering machine. They have always had cable. They cannot fathom not having a remote control. Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show. Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave. They never took a swim and thought about Jaws. They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are. They don't know who Mork was or where he was from. They never heard: "Where's the Beef" Or "I'd walk a mile for a Camel" OR, "de plane, Boss, de plane." They do not care who shot J. R. and have no idea who J. R. even is. McDonald's never came in Styrofoam containers. They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter.

Let's see... 1977. Hmm. the things on the list seem aimed at those who were at least teenagers in 1977. I was a bit younger, so the whole hippie thing wasn't really on my radar.
I was 8 years old and thought the Muppets were the coolest thing on TV. Sadly, after viewing this year's TV lineup (or lack thereof), I'm actually thinking that we need a quick infusion of the Muppets. Give the choice between watching the incomprehensible storyline on 'Lost', the backbiting and the character assassination on 'Survivor' or watching Gonzo do his chicken juggling act, I think I'd opt for the chickens, Gonzo and one of Fozzie's monologues. Oh, and Simon Cowell is sweetheart compared to the criticism dished out by Statler and Waldorf (the two geezers in the box seat). Forget Hillary - where is Miss Piggy when you really need her?I think I saw Star Wars 6 times. We chased each other around the yard with broom handles pretending to be Jedi, running around with towels as capes and climbing the apple tree out back to try to swing across the gap between the roof of the garage and the tree with a rope tied to one of the upper branches. This game lasted us all summer and into the fall, until it was too cold and Mom found the rope and grounded us. Now kids can get perfectly replicated character costumes, masks that really sound like Darth Vader, plastic light sabers that glow (thoght I don't think they can get a plastic replica of Han Solo's blaster - not PC) and can play out the Star Wars saga on their Playstations with full CGI detailing and are bored to tears after two days. I think I and my fellow little GenX'ers had the better deal. Oh, and I read the 'Little House on the Prairie' books my late Grandmother Ethel sent me for my birthday. All nine of them. Over and over. I was also watching the television series, with Melissa Gilbert as Laura Ingalls. That was the year that I realized that Hollywood took liberties with original works. There were things in the books that I never saw on the series and vice versa. When I asked my mother where there was a difference between the books and the TV show, she told me that TV had to be more exciting than that books; otherwise no one would want to watch. So, she said, TV writers made things up to make the things that were true about the books seem more entertaining. I suppose this knowledge, gleaned in 1977, is what me able to watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy and not growl "Where's Tom Bombadil!" at the screen. It also came in handy during viewings of the Harry Potter films, the film version of the Chronicles of Narnia and every Tom Clancy novel tha'ts been adapted to the screen. Oh, and I ended up wth a baby brother. His birthday was five days before mine, so I remember feeling a little 'off to the side' while my parents dealt with the newcomer. April used to be 'my month' and now I had to share it with someone else. I remember looking down at him, in his little green and white striped bunting suit and thinking "you better be worth all this fuss". He turned out to be my favorite sibling, as well as being a moneymaker one I started needing ready cash: my parents would pay me to babysit him on weekend nights when I was a teenager. Now I just hope he comes home from Iraq in one piece - it's all I want for my birthday these days.
