PETA Protests 'Passion'

Friday, March 12, 2004 1:45 p.m. EST PETA Protests 'Passion' Now that Mel Gibson's blockbuster hit "The Passion of the Christ" is breaking box office records everywhere, he's become a magnet for every left-wing group with a politically correct ax to grind. But even we were a bit surprised when People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals came out of the woodwork to join the protest party. No, PETA isn't upset about the film's violence or allegations of anti-Semitism. Turns out Gibson owns a beef cattle ranch in Columbus, Mont. And while the animal rights crowd isn't objecting to Gibson’s movie, they say the devout Catholic is hypocritical for participating in the beef industry. "If Gibson wants his audience to contemplate the awfulness of inflicting suffering on the innocent, he should show his own animals some mercy," a PETA representative complained to MSNBC. One PETA "Passion" protest featured a 10-foot Jesus on stilts holding a salad, while demonstrators handed out leaflets lecturing on "Christianity and Vegetarianism." Nicole Parascando contributed to this report.
