Hey guys, it is important to cook beans thoroughly, especially lima beans and red beans. FIDS can get verrry sick from undercooked beans. I always soak mine overnight and then rinse them , fill with clean water and boil them for 3 hours before I put them in Beanie BIRDIEBREAD which then cooks for another 30-90 mins depending on if they are muffins or cones. I would never use the mixes they put in with those 15 bean mixes-too much sodium and who knows what else. I use 20 kinds of beans that I mix myself. By the way, Beanie Muffins are on sale this month for Valentine's Studmuffins -the kind with feathers, Jim

Gini....how do you know if a bird is ill from undercooked beans ?! How do they make them sick? I guess I should never use the frozen/microwavable pinto beans again then, huh??? Okay, I'm very concerned right now...

On another note, I'm 24 years old and still can NOT eat veggies. Yes I know I need to for my health, but I've never ever liked them. I can put them in my mouth and chew them but I just can not get myself to swallow them I'm SERIOUS! I have NO idea what it is, it may be in my head...but it is what it is! Thank the Lord for Centrum vitamins

Fortunately, I've never seen a bird sick from beans but I'll post the symptoms as soon as I locate them again. As far as you and veggies go, have you tried a V-8 with some lemon and vodka?

How funny! If you really hate the smell, you could put them in a crock pot on the back porcch <ROFL> You are a good mom, Missi!

I do have a bit of a bottle of Grey Goose in the freezer........

Is V-8 seriously as good as eating your veggies? I may be able to stomach that a bit better.

V-8.... it can be expensive.... but it comes in a bottle and a can... I suggest buying the bottles and theres various types too... the stuff that comes in a can may taste metalic.....

Undercooked beans are bad on their gi systems and hard for the liver and kidneys to process. I'm sure the gas is quite painful as they have small organs and if it's painful for us it must be alot worse for them.

I only use mung, adzuki and lentils. NEVER lima beans. And black beans are too strong, too. I pass on the kidney beans as well.

If you sprout beans, the tails have to be at least a quarter of an inch, I dont sprout them I just cook them. Always organic, too.

YOu can get a guide online on how to cook each bean on the Whole Foods site. It's not recommended to microwave or use a crock pot for beans, only stovetop or pressure cooker. And throw away the soaking water. Not quite a problem as much for mung or lentils.

I've heard both sides about the soaking water. Funny thing is I toss the water when I am making beans any other time. If I am making Mike's manna mash I follow the recipe and keep the water. As its a 40+ year old proven recipe I trust it. It was probably over simplified for me but I was told the biggest reason to make sure you cook the beans long enough is to burn off the fat. Same thing for sprouting as thats what it feeds on first.

Actually the pre soaking/cooking gets rid of 80% of the stuff that causes the gas nothing about the fats. If I dont want gas for me I REALLY dont want gas for the birds lol.
