I figured it out....
I remembered a story I heard as a boy about a crow who wanted a drink of water from a glass on a windowsill.

It tried many times to get a sip, but the water level was too low....
so the smart old bird started bringin up pebbles from the garden below the window and dropping them into the glass....
The more pebbles it dropped in the higher the water level went...
Eventually the water was close enough to the top for the bird to get the drink it wanted.
