Ad-Aware and Search & Destory are the best bets here are the links to them (FREE)
to make sure your getting the most of them, make sure you check for updates. As becuase as fast as they are figuring out how to get rid of the spyware, the people are making new variations just as fast. Why? Spyware guys are making huge sums of money at the expense of internet users.... and in my eyes its plain and simple... they are damaging everyones private property ie hardware... Here are the links" Adaware = http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ Search & Destory= http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

I'll second that! I'm at work all day on a pc - when I go home to my Mac it's as if I've died and gone to heaven. Hang in there Laurie! If you start to suffer birdboard withdrawal I can pm you my work number (toll free) and I can read the posts to you over the phone. I certainly would not want you going through withdrawal! You have a support group here ya know! :icon_lol:

Laurie, I know what you mean about Birdboard withdrawals...I have the addiction myself! I have Norton Internet Security. It has a virus protector, forewall, intrusion detection, a few other features. Every once in a while it pops up a message "An attemped attack on you computer was blocked" or something like that.....I think that means it was blocking a spyware attempt. Kevin, can you tell me if this is enough protection or do I also need the Ad-aware, Search and Destroy and Spybot program on top? And would they clash with the Norton program?
While we are on the subject, I have Hotbar installed because I like the cute smileys. The ad pop-ups are getting annoying and also when I insert them into emails they appear as hyperlinks. Does anyone know a smiley program where you just buy them and no more strings attached and no pop-up ads?

Ad-aware, XoftSpy, Pc Bug Doctor, Spayware Blaster, CW Shredder and if you can get someone that knows what they are looking at to decipher what you need to keep and get rid of use Hijack This. Each one detects different spyware. Most spyware morphs itself once removed to embed somewhere else as something else.
Your best bet if not computer savvy, have someone that is. ie: a Tech, rid your computer of the spyware, then get a firewall. Such as Zone Alarm or Etrust EZ Armor. I fought this war for a year before I finally cleared my entire network of the nasty little things. They are a form of virus and some Trojan Virus. The firewall works and well. My advice on firewalls, Nortons will screw up your system. Great antivirus and system tools but the firewall did not go over well. I use EZtrust and have not had a problem in almost a year. Good Luck fighting this horrible spyware war. Also do a search on spyware and computer hijacking and you will learn a lot.

Tiki, frankly, I hate all Norton products, but they do their job. The firewall blocks hacking attempts. The anti-virus explains itself. You will want to get Ad-Aware, Spybot at least. If you ever get the 'Cool Web Search' then get CWShredder. Also, like Heaven said, if you can get someone techy to help you, then you can use Hijack this to remove browser hijacking things. Another good idea would be to switch to an alternate browser, such as Firefox, Mozilla, or Opera. Most browser hijackers are made for IE, so simply not using IE helps A LOT. And, if you were really adventurous, you could switch to a different operating system based on the Linux Kernel. On our home network, we all use various distros of Linux, and have not had a virus since we switched.
Just some friendly advice from me Kevin |
