Don't smack 'em....oh no. And that's really worked hasn't it? Not all kids are bad by any means, but those that are need a damn good thrashing. All this rubbish thrust down our throats by the do-gooders over the last thirty years has raised a breed of ill disciplined louts that have no respect for anything and anybody.
What do you do with the creatures that broke into a public aviary a while back and broke the wings of all the cockatiels in there?....Give them phsyciatric help maybe???
Here in the UK accessibility to firearms is much more difficult than in the States, but the feral gangs of scum kids over here seem to manage quite well without them.
There have been several cases over the past year of adults being kicked to death by gangs of youths just because they were confronted for smashing up cars or being told off for so called 'antisocial behaviour.'
The politicians don't know what to do because they have allowed the situation to get worse and worse over the years by listening to the soft liberal social workers and their clever clever ideas.
We have the highest rate of illegitimate teenage pregnancy in Europe so all the sex education they ram down the kids throats from the age of five has been a great success.
Tens of thousands of kids with no Father figure, easy access to drugs and booze. And a wealth of violence and filth on the internet.
24 hour drinking was introduced over here two years ago...another wonderful idea introduced by our brilliant politicians which has resulted in our town centres being turned into no go areas at night because of gangs of drunken teenagers. The British 'Bobby' on the beat has all but disappeared except in the city centres where they are unpaid, bullet proof vest wearing bouncers for the brewery trade.

Yes ....we've made a wonderful job of instilling discipline into kids nowadays......NOT.

Poohbear, I'm not sure who your rant is directed to, but seeing as how I'm one of those liberal do-gooders that you're talking about, I feel like I should respond.

I'll agree with you that lack of parental supervision and guidance is a big factor in how a child turns out. But you're also making the assumption that "no physical punishment" somehow equals "no discipline". You don't have to hit a child to teach them how to behave. And I would wager that most, if not all, the children that are breaking the law have been hit by their parents. Just like birds that are aggressive and phobic often have been abused by their guardians. Violence begets violence. I would rather teach empathy.

It is a lot harder to discipline a child proactively and positively, but it works much better than negative strategies.

If you were to make serious points about any subject on here the last thing I would do is accuse you of ranting whether I agreed with you or not.
I expected the old chestnut of 'violence begets violence' bit.
I'm not advocating child beating in the home but a sharp slap on the legs for doing something stupid or dangerous never hurt any kid.
As a matter of interest I've raised three sons and have NEVER lifted a finger against them....but they got the message at an early age that I would if necessary,it never was.
End of rant.

Physically punishing them would only tell them that their plans of physical violence was acceptable! It would tell them that you should physically punish someone who you think has done the wrong thing... that's exactly what they planned for that teacher. We need to lead by example. I agree whole heartedly with sugarbeth. You shouldn't use physical punishment on children OR birds and there are many parallels in raising each- positive reinforcement is the key. I watched my mother raise my now 8 year old sister who was basically never physically repremanded, even though she can be very hyper. Right now she is a very well behaved girl who does as she's told and lives to please others- just like my dogs and lorikeet who I raised by watching how my mum raised my baby sister.

Positive reinforcement is great and of course should always be the first response, but lets be honest - their are times, situations & individuals with whom the best teacher is a swift and somewhat painful kick in the butt.

Let us not kid ourselves about the path those kids are on...
Our society can deal rather harshly with such behaviour in adults and I think we are obligated to show them exactly where it leads.
Using such extreme violence gets you confined in a small space with a bunch of individuals with a similar lack of restraint... and the chances are insanely high that one or more of them with suddenly develop a problem/attitude with you.

The way to avoid ending up there is to never again allow yourself to repeat those actions.
