I had typed out a wonderfully elegant reply, but my ISP decided to screw up on me. But yes, it's quite doable. You just have to contact the right people and fill out the right forms.

The main regulating body is CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). So these two pages may serve as a good launching point for your quest:

http://cites.org/eng/resources/faq.shtml
http://cites.org/eng/resources/transport/index.shtml

Also, I have an aunt who works for CITES, and helped punch out those parrot regulations in the '80s. So I could email her if you need more help, but I can't say how long it will take for her to respond (at the moment she's living down in Chile with her husband; she flies back and forth constantly).

Last year I did ask her what I'd have to do if I was moving from the U.S. to Canada with a parrot. She said "you'd just have to fill out a form." But I'm sure that moving with and importing a bird are legally two separate things. So check out those sites, and good luck.

I didn`t really think we in Oz were allowed to import birds I know if you have a PET you can bring it in with you but it must stay months in Quarentine which would be quite stressful for birds ...I will be interested to know if I am wrong and you can import birds ...Good Luck ..we have a pretty STRICT CUSTOMS RULES down under ..

I wish you guys above were right. But I don't believe you are. I have been a "stakeholder" in the process of trying to get my Bindy allowed to Australia when we move back later this year. It's a DEFINITE NO. -even if it were quarantined. And believe me, I have been checking very very frequently as it's tearing me up inside.

See the Australian quarantine and inspection site link below:

this is the link to register as a 'stakeholder' to hear updates quickly:

I don't know why they are so strict on birds, obviouly the people in charge don't believe that people can form a strong attachment to birds like they do with dogs and cats. I had made a couple phone calls trying to help Stacey find a way around this, AQIS is the stumbling block, they won't let foreign bird in.

Tiki:

I think it has more to do with the devastation that PBFD had on the cockatoos. Aussies are very careful about protecting their native species and I must take my hat off to them.

It cant be because of pbfd because that is rampant over here and we probably have more probs thatn anyone alse. It is rediculous as we let dogs into the country and rabies would be more of a threat than any bird disease surely if we can quarenteen against rabies we can against bird flu
