I've been nursing my old dell for 6 years now. I want to get some new software and know it will crap out if I try to put it on, so I went computer shopping the other night. I finally found a computer that will fit my budget and my needs. I got a Dell Inspiron (base price 299) and upgraded it so that it has 3GB memory, 320RAM, and a kick butt graphics card. Best part? I got to request that it come with the XP operating system so I won't have to do any troubleshooting with Vista. YAY. Grand total? under 500 bucks. Whew!
I looked up the specs on my current computer and amazed the darn thing is still running! 256MB Memory and only 60 GBRAM. Dang! In the fall I plan on getting a macbook laptop for myself.. I love mac, just can't afford one right now. Those imac all in ones are so kick butt. I use them in a graphic arts class at school. You could be running like 5 heavy programs at once (photoshop, illustrator, indesign, etc) and it wouldn't crash.

Oh thanks for the website, that will come in handy.
Seriously if anyone is looking for a dell right now, they have a great 'tax rebate check' sale. 2 of their inspiron towers start at a base of 299, and then once you go through customizing it it still comes out at less then what you would have paid for the base model, with those customizations, previously. I think I spent under 500 and it said that compared to the before sale price, with all the customizations, it still was $140 off.

Hehe, I sure hope you mean 3GB RAM and 320 harddrive. A 3 gig harddrive would be pretty useless
Mine is a compaq. I love compaqs because instead of having to burn a back up disk, they all come with a preinstalled back-up drive. It was only $500, so I immediately bought a 8800 gt graphics card, power supply and a new case. For the good processor, ram, harddrive, and vista, it was a great deal. I probably wouldn't have been able to even build something that cheap because vista itself is like $200. I'm not fond of vista, but your computer's performance will be totally bottle necked without it. My favorite operating system is still windows 98 <3 macs are pretty, but the idea of only being able to upgrade your mac by buying a new one doesn't suit me. |

I have a 2005 PowerBook g4, running on Panther. I had to buy it after Katrina when my G3 iBook was ruined. It's the last ever Mac laptop that isn't Intel based, which is a little upsetting because I enjoy playing games when I'm stressed and as of January 2008, no new games are being made compatible to the pre-Intel macs. We also bought a 2007 iMac that's running on Tiger, still, because I honestly keep forgetting to upgrade to Leopard. It's Intel based, so my games are now played on the desktop. Which, although slightly less convenient, has proven to be better for my neck and back. I will be buying a MacBook Pro sometime next year (in 2009), either after the April upgrades or the October upgrades. I love my little PowerBook, it has yet to slow down and has never given me a single issue. But I REALLY want an Intel-based Mac laptop to bring on business trips. After we're done paying off the wedding, I'll be investing

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop with XP. which has been pretty reliable for the past 2-3 years. I tried a MAC before I got this, and I'm so Windows oriented, I could not figure out the MAC, it was just frustration for me, so I got the Toshiba with windows. I really like the way the MAC's look, but just can't get used to them.

I have an iMac desktop that I bought a year and a half ago. I always had PC type computers before. I love this computer but honestly, I'm amateur enough that I'm sure I'd love a Dell or something like that too. Still, I've not had a days trouble with the iMac.

Haha, just so that everyone knows I work in the Computer tech department at my University (so I fix computers all day long), if you ever have questions shoot me a Private Message I would be more then happy to help you out (you all have helped me sooo much with my birds!).
That being said I would definitely recommend a MAC they seem to have the least software/hardware problems by far! The best PC is, by far, the IBM (now the Lenovo). However, if you can't afford an IBM (they are really pricey) you should go with the HP. Not only do they have great hardware configurations their technical support team seems to be the most helpful! Just a note, remember, you can always put Windows OS on the Macintosh Computer, so if you don't like Apple's Operating System you should still consider their computers as an option. Once again, they have the least hardware problems in my experience. I see PC's all day long, and when I do see a Macintosh needing hardware work it is usually because it is very old or the User did something very wrong :-).
