I must say to each and every on of you I once held your same view.

After coming home,,,, and listing to the description of what Happened to Snowwhite she literally burst open, & you all should know this is not a large room and she was not a good flyer. It may or may not be because her previous owners kept her clipped. She offten flew into walls and is one reason why we stopped allowing her out of the bird room. She had had many bad crashed before.

I can not help but feel however that if her wings were clipped she would still would be with us.

I just spent the last 2 hours with both daisy and Sylvester in our bedroom, both are shanken but what happened this morning, as well Slyvester displayed a behavour I can only describe as crying I have never seen her beharour displayed before.

All I can say is all of our Birds are loved daily and compared to the birds I had seen at the recent bird show in far superior health conditioning and cleanliness to everyother bird I had seen. Yet to add both Delilah and Snowwhite were loved and cared for for 7 years by their previous owners who did kep them clipped, neither lasted long dispite the love and care we provided them not to mention their very own room un clipped.

Nothing is good nor bad to compare to something else, it is true both birds were in much better health, and personality after coming into our care but it is also true they both are very much dead today.

I am no longer willing to risk it.

Snowwhite Daisy and Sylvester morning Delilahs loss.

I am sorry for your loss, however i must disagree on some level. We had a cockatiel that was clipped and she was taken outside unharnessed. A gust of wind came along and off she went, fully clipped. We did get her back but she was found on the road, if someone hadnt stopped and picked her up she would have been killed by a car or dog or cat as I'm not sure a gust of wind would have saved her.

I am a bit of both. My cockatiel Daisy is clipped because he always injured himself when he flies. My green cheek at the moment is clipped because i did it to tame her but will see how she goes flighted. My alexandrine is flighted but she is a fantastic flier. She doesnt go near windows, doesnt like to fly through door ways and doesnt like outside much. Our doors are sometimes left open for a minute because she hates outside. Also I have been teaching her flight recall incase she gets outside. She will fly to me and i have taught her to fly down to me too. Doors will have to be closed for my green cheek. I don't take my birds out unharnessed but am thinking about trying it with matches once she perfects her recall.

Don't beat yourself up about Snowwhite's accident. When my tiel was clipped when she came home, she could EASILY fly into the next room when spooked (that's when she was most determined, when spooked). A proper clip should not stop them from flying, only from gaining height. Therefore I would think that it's very possible for a clipped bird to have the same result as Snowwhite had (it's also NOT your fault). Smaller birds can easily fly even when clipped. If they can't fly at all when clipped, then the clip is too extreme and then you risk them falling and breaking the keel bone or beak, also not a desirable outcome. In my opinion, there is risk of SOMETHING no matter what we choose to do.

It's hard not too, you are right about over clipping . I know if I had taken gone out side and felt the wind I would of never taken her out it was just to windy. As for snowwhite again you are probly right then again she had to have make a couple of laps around the room to get up the speed she did to do the damage described to me. Accroding to my wife there was alot of blood.

These 2 events occuring so close together just has everyone shaken. When I lost Delilah I was to ashamed to post it here because of my boasting of her out side trustiblility. The heart braker over her was just how manytime times she attempted to land on me if only she would have just crashed to the ground of which she was just more frearfull of being on the ground then she was in being lost. I believe after many hours and several attempts she got frustrated and just took to the air she had on that last time we seen her flew many blocks north and south of us at well over 100' up screaming the whole time until she finally flew not only out of site but out of ear shot as well.
Too bad this wasn't a global warming year and that we have been colder the 20 degrees below average all summer long . I don't believe she survived the night it got well below 40 that night I spent the next day constantly looking for and calling for her to no availe.

It should be noted on her thrid attempt to come to be the winds finally blew here 2 blocks away and we lost tauch. I was already late for my meeting at the office I rushed to the office finished what I needed to do then started walking the neighborhood wistling for her finally she heard me and started calling for me and thats when the nightmare continued for the next 7+ hours untill the sun went down.

here is the story as it was back then..
