I too have seen many neglect and abuse cases involving all animals as I trained horses for about 10 years and then was grooming pets for the rest of my time in the states, which was over 5 years(plus various voluteer work everywhere). I too am puzzled by the expressions on peoples faces when you try to explain to them that an animal is suffering in some way or the other, they just don't get it. Over the years I have come to realize that they just don't have the same feelings towards animals as we all do. It is just an object to them, no feelings. Trying to explain to them does little good as it doesn't seem to change their attitude at all.

Felony charges are being considered and he will probably get charged as soon as he gets out of jail on a drunken-driving charge

19 dead horses, 9 starving ones found on Hewitt farm

Hanson added, "We're probably going to see worse before we're going to see better" because of the overall economic downturn. He cited the high price of gasoline to run farm vehicles and the skyrocketing cost for hay to feed horses.

Still, he said, "that's not an excuse" for neglecting animals. "There's always a way" to do what's best for animals, he said, whether it's turning them over to rescue operations or selling them. However, he acknowledged, "you can't get a decent dollar" for a horse now.

Fitzpatrick said she has seen many cases of abuse and neglect in her 15 years of rescuing horses and other animals. Even so, she said, "It's still tough. If it ever became easy, I'd have to go find something else [to do]."

People can always do what happened to my Aunt and Uncle 2 weeks ago if they can't afford to take care of their horses any more. My uncle was heading back from an cattle auction in Geneva, AL when he got a flat with no spare on the empty stock trailer he was pulling. He pulled over to the side if the road, pulled the tire, unhooked the trailer and headed back towards Geneva to get the tire repaired. When he got back about 2 hours later, there were 3 horses in the trailer! They all looked to be in pretty good shape and well cared for. He has been running an add in the local paper in Geneva for the past couple weeks trying to locate the owners (He was concerned that they were stolen). He ended up giving them to another guy that they ride with that has a large cutting horse farm.

wow 3 free horses? That would be a dream come true for my mum and I!
What a terrible story about the starved horses. There are so many people who would give them the loving homes that they deserve, and he literally just leaves them to rot. Argh I'm so angry!
