Does anyone else have dreams about being a bird, or flying? They are the best dreams! I am a lucid dreamer, and often know when I am dreaming and that I can manipulate everything. I can sometimes fly and create stories with characters and a plot. I remember them vividly and in great detail- down to my emotions and what I could feel. In my last dream, I was half conscious that it was a dream, but I was so involved in it I kept forgetting. I knew that I could fly if needed though. Last night was a great night of dreaming! I had many dreams but my favorite one I thought I'd share with you all because it had a bird in it
![]() "To dream that you are flying, signifies a sense of freedom where you had initially felt restricted and limited." This is my dream exactly... The dream was based around one of my favorite places in the world; the beach where my holiday house is... except it was a bit different in my dream. It was a bright sunny day and I was in the deep, clear, bright blue water. I turned into a seal and it was great to glide through the water with such ease It was so weird to feel how they move and how they walk on their back feet/ tails. It was very vivid, realistic and I could feel everything a seal would. When I crawled up onto land, I felt the sharpness of the rocks on my blubbery skin, the rippling of my seal fat and the rocking movements as I waddled up the boulder littered hill toward a building. The water dripping from my rubbery skin, I rummaged through a place with lots of pretty rocks. I found a beautiful rock which was orange with white stripes, and it was formed inside a glass jar the same shape as the rock. I picked it up with my flipper to look at it, which was difficult. The owner of the rocks (a man with a moustache, go figure) came out of the pale blue building, yelling and waving his arms, and started throwing jars of the orange/ white striped rocks at me. I fled but it was really hard, being a fat seal, so I started trying to fly. I could get in the air for a second before touching rock again, but I kept trying. He was chasing, getting closer and I was getting to the end of the rocky area and onto grainy sand- I would have nowhere to dodge behind! I took another leap into the air, and found I could just about fly! I touched the ground to push off, then glided just above the gravel, flapping my wings a bit. A cliff was looming ahead, and I was going to go over it. I was so scared, but kept going. I soared over the edge and realised I'd changed into a seabird. A large brown (subantarctic) skua to be exact! Since there were no updrafts, I was flying downwards, but I could feel the wind rippling through my feathers and my wings straining to catch a draft to push me up. Soon I was down at the water, skimming my feet across the surface, not a worry in the world. It was a great feeling, I love flying. It's one of my favorite feelings ever. Although I've only done it in my dreams, I recall the feeling exactly. The weightlessness, using the wind to push you upwards, the freedom- nothing above or below, just you and the sky... ((To see gulls in your dream, represents your relationship with logic/objectivity and the unconscious/subjectivity. To see soaring gulls in your dream, indicates a clear perspective. To see a seal in your dream, indicates your playfulness and your ability to use and incorporate differing ideas and thoughts into a situation. Seals are a symbol of good luck, success, and spiritual understanding. It also signifies prosperity, faithful friends, and security in love.)) This is the bird I turned into: ![]()

I used to have dreams of flying. They were great! Most of the time I had to have a wind blowing in my face to be able to get off the ground. I'm not that found of heights & found the "shock" of finding I was flying could trigger my lucid control. After that I just had to do the "Superman launch" to get airbourne. (You know, the classic step & jump, with one hand pointed skyward.
I should say I used to dream Then over a decade ago, my health took a downturn... Since then, I don't sleep long enough or deep enough to dream.. Hmmmmm BTW, I don't know if this is gonna change your dream analysis or not... If I'm not mistaken, while the bird in your picture isn't actually a "seagull"... It's a "Puffinus griseus" or Sooty Shearwater.

Gee thanks Kali :p
Buteo, the need for wind in your face is interesting... hehe Superman launch I have to spread my arms and do a run up like a bird (unless I'm already a bird). I'm sorry you can't dream anymore, they're like an escape for me... but you've got your art! Oh I already named the bird in my dream as a "Brown (Subantarctic) Skua-" part of the "gull family" Laridae, which is why I reffered to it as a gull. They didn't have Skuas in the dream interpretations so I had to generalize! Shearwaters are a smaller species than skuas, but I don't know much about them. I never said it was a "seagull" LOL they're WHITE!

LOL!!!
Dream interpretation always seemed more than a little too generalized to me... It's like the old saying "A horse is a horse". Sure it's true- to a point... The point being only to someone who basically knows diddley about horses... An American Paint is different from a Canadian Pacer, is very different from a Lipizzan, is very different from a Belgian & so on... I thought the pic might be a Skua, but there was nothing in that image to give me a size reference & the coloration of plumage on both birds is very similar. Yeah when I was a kid, I kinda wondered about the wind-in-the-face thing. It was funny because a lot of the time, the wind was category 5 hurricane level & my first flight of the dream would start only when the wind blew my feet out from under me. I get it now ....the whole "able to rise above, in the face of adversity". Maybe that was a precog warning about how stormy my life was gonna be at least on the health front...

I've dreamt I was flying but in a human body not a bird body. It's always great until I have to figure out how to land, there's always some kind of fear of falling or crash landing. Unfortunately I had a nightmare about my cockatiel. I dreamt she got out and I was calling her name over and over and it was getting to be sundown and I was terrified for her. Maybe I'll try dreaming in a different body sometime (message to subconscious). Anyway, thanks for sharing this interesting part of yourself.

Aw what a horrible dream about your cockatiel. It's cruel when our subconsciousness gives us nightmares about our birds! If I'm flying and I worry about falling, I usually begin to falter so I have to constantly stay potitive... is that a life lesson? You can actually teach yourself to dream what you want... I'm not good at it yet, but I try to tell myself to have flying dreams every night. It's great to be a bird because it gives you an idea of how it feels. Thanks for reading mine and sharing yours. Dreams really fascinate me... it's actually my theme for photography this semester.
