I thought the story behind it was kinda cool. Anything to do with grandmother stories are always cool.

And my grandmother, she was pretty cool.

Half of my family pronounces it Amy, and the other pronounces it "Ah-mee." So I go by either.

All of my friends say "Ah-mee" because they think it's cooler. I like it, but it's ridiculous to say over the phone

Come on down to Cajun Country. We pronounce things in all sorts of crazy ways.

For instance, how do you think "Tchoupitoulas" is pronounced? Or Natchitoches? Because you're wrong unless you've heard it before - and we may be 50th in education in the country, but we ALL know how to spell those words without looking it up.

And, yet, some true French/European words, we pronounce differently than they're supposed to be. Like Calliope. . .Cah-lie-o-pee . . .We pronounce it Cally-ope. Because we like to recognize non-natives on the street.
