You may want to check the breeder listing in bird magazines, your local newspaper, and see if there are any exotic bird fairs in your area (that's also a great place to get a bird). Bird stores usually jack up their rates. I would even suggest contacting your local avian vet to see if he/she knows any Canary breeders in your area.

On a side note, I purchased my male from the pet store for $105, but I got my female from a breeder for only $40. She was selling her male Canaries for $60, if that gives you any idea of the cost difference between a store and a breeder.

Good luck!

There are always a ton of birds to be found at my local animal shelters. Might be another place to look besides breeders and pet stores.

That's a good idea. The problem is that it is very hard to find a small bird like a Canary at a place like an animal shelter. I should know because that's the first place that I looked for a Canary. I was told by a local bird rescue in my area that none were available, and that they don't see many smaller birds like Canaries.

You may want to try your local bird rescue in your area just to see if any area available. You never know!

Generally speaking, if you adopt a pet from a rescue or shelter you must agree to never breed that animal. Doesn't matter if it's an animal that can't typically be spayed/neutered or not.

I believe that some of the canary organizations advertise in Bird Talk. Or do a Google search for canary breeders/ exhibitors. There's a good chance that you could find a mentor nearby. Don't forget about birdmart.com, birdbreeder.com, birdsnways.com or hoobly.com as well.
