The reason why I asked if it was for real is becuase I have worked dispatch. Not 911 dispatch, but still we would have hung up after about 10 seconds making sure there was no real problems and no officer needed to be sent.

In some places there are fines. My grandmother had one of those handicapped phones with the big red button. Well my toddlers found it to much to resist.
After the second time they pressed it we were sent a notice that the next nonemergency call would cost us 500 dollars. My grandmother started locking her bedroom door.

They have to be sure everything is all right. My father dialed 911 while setting the "emergency" speed dial on the phone (by the way, never do this... it's too easy to press accidentally, "911" is such a short number so you can dial it quickly anyway, not to mention that a lot of speed dial setups require you to actually call the number when you store it). He told them he was just setting the speed dial and they let him know that they were sending an officer over to the house anyway because that's the policy. He had to sign a form saying he called but there was no emergency.

Another time I was babysitting for two kids, one of which had gone over to a friend's house. I was playing outside with the other (older) brother when a police car pulled up to the house and asked if we had dialed 911. The older brother (who has always been the more reliable one) denied having used the phone at all today. We called over the younger brother and it turns out he had misdialed his friend's number when he called to see if he could come over. That mis-dialing had the digits 9-1-1 in it. The kid was prone to lying, but it sounded plausible enough to be true. I had to sign one of those no-emergency forms. That was the first "important" document I ever had to sign (not including package deliveries and report cards).

I work in 911 dispatch...and you get a lot of stupid calls....A LOT, though this one was the dumbest I think I've ever heard. Of course...there was that one where the guy called an ambulance (said that it was an EMERGENCY) and wanted to be taken to the hospital b/c he had a SCHEDULED SURGERY in a couple of hours, and didn't wanna wait for a cab. THEN he asked the ambulance crew if they could stop on the way so he could get some breakfast.
In a lot of areas you're not allowed to hang up on ANY CALLER....though I think that the dispatcher's individual discretion or permision of the supervisor to hang up should've been utilized. unfortunately, a cops time is not usually "billable" like it is for fire-rescue or ambulance transport.

My husband's a cop so he had a good laugh about that one! He gets a lot of ...interesting calls to say the least. He can only start to imagine the ones that the dispatch filters out!
