Sad day for the Schiavo family

and for the families who have loved ones in a similar situation.
May Terri and her Family find peace with everything that they have been through. This hits me rather hard also, as I sit here with the Guardianship/Custody papers infront of me for my nephew Kris, who have been in a comatose state since he was 16. My sister is the sole caregiver of her son, and has asked me to step in and resume her lifestyle in the event something should happen to her, and Kris is still with us.
My husband, knowing what it means to my sister and I, said he would have not problem being a caregiver to my nephew. We would leave our life behind, and move some 1500 miles to Florida. (my birds already have a room)
So I walk in the shoes of Terri's parents, and I know how thier heart is breaking.
I wonder what rights I will have in Florida with my nephew, should it come down to me being his guardian.....

I'm off to be fingerprinted, and have the court papers noterized. Please keep my nephew and sister in your thoughts, as you listen to the Schiavo story on the news. :icon_frow

Lisa - I think that is wonderful that you would take on that responsibility, and that you understand what it would mean to do so. So many people would sign the papers, whatnot, even for a healthy child, and not really think about what it would mean should something happen to the parents.

As for the Schiavo case. I have been following if for many years. I am one of those that would want the plug pulled if I were in a vegitative state, hands down; and I would want my husband to keep up the fight no matter what pressure he was under. HOWEVER - that being said, this case is different. There is much discussion, as I'm sure you know, of exactly how bad Terrie was, how she got there, and the amount/type of rehab she received. After reading what was available to me, I decided that The poor thing should be given the rehab she deserved, and should be given a chance. She would most likely have been eating on her own, had her husband allowed her to continue with rehab oh so many years ago.

This brings up a whole 'nother issue. Should the feeding tube have been put in in the first place? With Terrie, they thought it would be temporary, without the rehab it wasn't. This is such a sad case, that they starved the poor woman to death. I realize that there comes a point that the "living" must let go, but I don't think the media has accurately reported Terrie's condition. That is my opinion. One of a person that has followed this case for 5 years.

This lack of complete reporting has caused some mental battles between my husband and I over the last few weeks. He is new to the case and has believed what the media says. He tells me to let the poor thing go, and the parents are nuts to go against their daughter's wishes. I try to explain to him the whole situation, but it is what the media has been reporting that sticks in his mind. We have spoken about life support issues before, and we are in total agreement about them. But the way this case is reported, and all of the unkowns that are involved, we are at odds. I agree, people that are "gone" should be removed from life support, as I would want to be, but I don't believe Terrie was "gone" and I believe her treatment has been negligent. May she rest in peace.

I also have been following this situation for a few years. I'm deeply saddened by what has happened and the implications for the future. How long before our culture starts to decide that all disabled people should be killed as they did to Terri? Last time I checked, I would be arrested if I decided to starve a pet to death, yet this was allowed to happen to Terri.

My prayers are with the Schindler family. Michael Schiavo would not let them be in Terri's room when she passed, nor would he allow her Priest to be present. I cannot understand such cruelty.

I agree that this has been a truly painful situation for everyone involved. I am, however, fully able to accept the fact that without a cerebral cortex you are no longer "alive" - no amount of rehab can restore a liquified brain. (this is not media propaganda, it is medical fact.) Those are the cold hard facts - I am not new to this either and have thought from the start that if I were in her situation I would pray that my family would not hold onto me longer than necessary.
May Terri finally rest in peace.

My thoughts exactly.....

Jodi and Birdyland...thank you for your kind thoughts....i certainly did not do it for the kudos, but simply because that is what you do for family.
And...Kris is my family.
If my sister find some peace in her life, knowing that we would step in and help...that is what we will do.........

The only thing her husband wanted was the insurance money. I think he shouldn’t get one cent of it.IMHO
May she rest in peace.

??????????????

From what i saw she was moving, awake and was totally 100% alive, and with a brain that isnt working that just doesn't happen so what they did amounts to murder as far as i am concerned.

If she was in a coma without brain function at all i could understand but that was not the case.

Terry

I AGREE HE WILL GET WHAT IS COMING TO HIM.... It is really sad to see this happen. I just cannot beleive how cold an cruel her husband has been and to not allow her family to be with her as she dies is really low. he had the police escort her mother and father out and threatened to have them arrested if they did not leave. 10 monutes later she died. God help the person that ever tried to keep me from my child.
ya know he had moved on and has another woman and kids, what was wrong with her parents taking care of her.? i just feel like he did this just because he could.. cold and no heart...... jmo
