New Scarlet Macaw
I need to get in touch with someone who knows alot about Scarlet Macaws.... I want to find out as much as possible about this bird, its habits, its mannerisms, and where to find people that would like to mate their bird with mine, and when male Scarlets are usually ready to breed. I also would like to know the normal behaviors of Scarlets so I can tell if he's just being himself or if there are things I should keep him from doing. Please help if you can !!!! Thank you, Nicole & 'Roja'

Hi, Jodi has just touched the tip of the iceberg. I get the impression that this may be your very first big macaw and you've chosen one of the more "difficult" ones at that. Scarlets are very "mouthy", by that I mean they use their beaks more than most of the other species. They are often seen hangin on the edge of the manu clay banks by their feet and beaks.
Scarlets are also among the smartest of the big macaws. That good and bad for the handler. You have to be SMARTER. In other words, you have to be able to anticipate their next move. If you don't, you'll soon lose control and have a bird that no one can safely handle. When we offer a mate to a bird, we do so knowing that its a lifetime gift, non refundable and it means that this bird will now return to its natural state and desire its mate and chicks more than its "master". It will protect and defend its feathered family with its life. On some rare occasions, he may decide to remain cordial with his humans, but to depend on that is folly. THE OUTLAW
