Limit your carbs!!! Works great and low fat is not a gimick!!! The more fat the more calories!!! 1 carb is 15 grams. So allow your self 30 grams in the AM and 45 grams for lunch and about 45 grams for dinner. Remember fruit and Veges are also carbs. I use the 1/4 cup measure for anything prepared like rice or noodles. Fresh veges are the best for you!!! Make your meat sizes about 4 ozs. Lean meat. Eat all the green veges you want!!!

I am on Atkins induction basically though I have gone as high as 30 carbs a day, I try to keep it under 20. I also try to keep the fat and calories down as much as possible. I should be working out more, but I can't seem to tear myself away from BB and the rest of the internet!

My mother works at a hospital and she talks to the dietitian all the time about the new fad diets. It's all about the calories. A diets only succeed if it manages to reduce your caloric intake. The reason Atkins and South Beach are so successful is because carbs (and fats) are not very filling so we eat more of them than say, meats. Protein is probably the most filling type of food you can eat, so Atkins and South Beach encourage you to eat more meat because it has more protein and it will fill you up faster, thus you will eat less.

One of the best ways to cut down on your weight is to exercise and eat less. If you take in less calories and burn more calories you will lose fat. You may not lose it fast and you might not even lose weight (muscle weighs more than fat), but managing your calories is the key to good health. Any dietitian will tell you so.

One easy way to watch your calories is to put less on your plate when you take a serving of food. You can always go up for second, but odds are you won't want to. We eat because we think we are hungry, not because we actually are hungry. Make an effort to put half as much on your plate as you usually do whenever you take a serving. You will still probably go up for seconds (or thirds), but if you put half the normal amount on each plate you are still eating less, even though it may not feel like it. Obviously if you are still hungry eat more, but make sure you're eating more because you're hungry, not because you just want to eat.

Listen to your body. In a study a few years back (I was told this in a science class and forget the specifics) children were deprived of certain nutrients in their diet, say potassium. They were then given a choice of a number of foods to eat (NO SUGAR, it throws off the balance). Without fail, the children chose the food high in the nutriet they were deprived of, say bananas. Your body will do the same thing if you try to stay away from highly unnatural processed foods, especially those that are high in sugar or fat.

Okay, that's enough ranting. I'll go now. :icon_wink

I've heard before that eating 3 meals a day is really unnatural. It is more natural to be eating throughout the day, having 4-6 meals each day. These meals however are much smaller than one might have for lunch or dinner. You might consider is more or less as snacking throughout the day. Keep the snacks healthy, 4oz of meat or meat the size of a deck of cards, and bring with you lots of fruits, and/or veggies to munch on during the day.

It would probably be best though to look up more information on this type of dieting, as there is not much I can really say about it.

I am a fairly um, uh, well, I ain't a little guy. I made an effort on Jan 1st to do exactly what Merkuri was saying. But I did it differently. instead of putting half on my plate, I just fixed myself one plate...period. (Every member of my family is big..our servings are big). After eating said one plate, I sat for 10 or 15 minutes and realized I wasn't hungry anymore. For the first week or so, I continually had this urge to eat more, but after that it went away. This is going good for me and I have TONS more energy than I used to. Definitely glad I tried it.

I've heard before that it doesn't matter how much you eat, within about 10 minutes of starting to eat you will not be hungry. It may actualy be "10 minutes after you stop eating", which sounds like Kevin's experience, but in any case it doesn't matter how much you eat, but how long. Another tip is to try and eat slower.

All diets are an attempt to control calories, but the simplest way is just to cut your portions. We eat incredibly huge portions in the US, and I personally believe this is the main cause of our obesity. It's not that we eat unhealthy stuff, it's that we eat a metric ton of it. I mean, extra-larges, super-sized meals, all-you-can-eat buffets... our culture is all about eating more. We need to start eating less.

I haven't seen it either, but I've been told about it. Somebody decided he was going to eat at McDonalds for all of his meals. Nothing else. And whenever they asked him to supersize (as they're supposed to), he had to agree. He always ate the whole thing. He went to doctors before, during, and after, and they begged him to stop. The things that were happening to his body were absolutely disgusting and even life-threatening. It wasn't a scientific experiment, but he kept good records of his weight and general health.

That's basically it. He put on about 25 pounds in one month and it took him over a year to lose it again. I haven't been back to a Maccas since then....and I would normally be a junk food junkie.
