Careful craigslist addicts!

Pair beat Tigard man who placed Craigslist ad

06:49 AM PDT on Thursday, October 16, 2008

By Associated Press

TIGARD, Ore. (AP) -- Investigators say a Tigard man was beaten and robbed by a man and a woman who responded to his Craigslist ad.

Tigard police spokesman Jim Wolf says the male visitor entered the man's home Tuesday night and pulled out a pistol.

The man then beat the victim, who was later bound with duct tape and plastic ties.

The pair stole the man's truck, but it was later found abandoned.

The victim was treated for his injuries at a hospital and released.

OMG!!!

So very very scary. Another reason I attempt to meet people in a public place first!

Then again, I'd probably be the idiot who tried to knock some sense into the idiot with the gun

Glad this person was okay!

My husband is pretty shady and scary looking so I always worry when we go to other people's homes. Of course as soon as he opens his mouth he seems less scary

How freaking scary is that!?!?!? I buy stuff off of Craigslist all the time. This will make me think a bit more before going to pick an item up alone.

That is truly scary.

I buy quite a bit of items and sell them as well through sites such as craigslist. There have been times I have gotten bad vibes from someone who is trying to sell/ buy with me, so I cancelled the purchase or sell. Oprah said something once a long time ago that stuck with me and that was that it is better to be rude than dead. I believe that with my whole heart.

With that being said, ladies I would not suggest any of us going to meet with someone alone, even if it is broad daylight. For instance, I am selling a gentleman a pair of reptiles and refused to meet him until my boyfriend could accompany me. So these are the rules that I follow:

1. I never invite anyone into my home that I do not know. If I am selling something I tell them I will meet them somewhere to complete the transaction. I also do not give them any information other than my name and cell phone number.

2. Likewise, I do not go to make transactions alone, even during the day. There have been instances of people being abducted in broad day light, and women unfortunately can be easy targets.

3. I never meet anyone at night, ever.

4. Unless I get to reasonably know a person, I do not go to their home. If I do go, its only after talking to them several times, and again someone accompanies me.

I think if everyone followed these rules, incidents like the one would not take place as often. Its a very scary and dangerous world we live in today unfortunately.

There are stories on my local news all the time about people who are robbed by someone on CL. I think it was last year where a woman was killed by someone who had posted an ad looking for a nanny. I hate to say this but it wasn't too smart on her part. She went to meet the person at a park that is not in a very populated area and it's not like a regular park, it's more of a nature center so it's all woods and fields. She didn't tell anyone where she was going and instead of meeting a family she met a 19 year old who killed her. They caught him and he said that he wanted to know what it was like to kill someone (scary enough in itself).
Ever since then I try and go with my boyfriend but if I can't find someone to come with me then I always tell at least 2 people where I am going, the address and I call them when I get to the place and tell them if they don't hear back from me in 15 minutes to call me, if I don't answer then call 911.
With most things I meet people but I hate it when it's birds and animals cuz I want to see where they are living first. That is when I try and make sure BF can come with me.

what's CCW?

I used to be a raver and took a few illegal substances over the years and i shudder the amount of times i got myself into dodgy situations over the purchase of said substances... meeting people in dark carparks, getting into random ppl's cars. selling stuff to a group of guys who were ALL bigger than me and i was all alone, going into a house and realising it was full of herion addicts shooting up!!! and the girl who i just met was an addict herself! and when i bought something on ebay and went to someone's house to pick it up in the middle of the day right after the auction ended, not telling anyone where i was going... plus i drop off big bags of food, kennels to ppl who tell me stories at work about not having cars, being blind etc.. and i do this by myself too!!

i used to trust people a little too much , i still probly do. but it's scary what does happen to ppl out there.. i will think thrice before i do it again!! luckily we don't have such bad stories about things happening here in Aust but you still do here some awful things happening....
