Yea Maggie had an infected anal gland once - it was horrific. Luckily the vet took care of it but I know how gross it can be.

I have heard of this. I have dogs and I have never ever experienced this anal gland stuff. My son's dog had an infection not too long ago and he said the same thing. Thank goodness mine have not done this. But thanks to the graphic explanation this way if it does happen I will know exactly what it is!!!

As a groomer, many times we had to empty the anal glands. Not a pretty job!!!!

Ewwww, our dog had that problem last summer!

I had a friend whose dog apparently had such a problem with anal glands, his mom learned how to deal with it HERSELF.

Nooooo thank you! This is why I stick with cats and birds!

This thread hits close to home for me right now! My dachshund had an infected, plugged anal gland that ruptured this weekend! His back leg literally split open Saturday morning, blood gushing out (and other foul stuff). Rushed him to the emergency vet at 5:30AM and he had surgery to repair the rupture and cut out the necrotic tissue (dead skin, muscle tissue).

Sadly, the skin and muscle tissue continued to die so the stitches didn't hold and his leg opened up again. This morning I had to take him back to the vet for a second surgery. I'm still waiting to hear from the vet's office.

This came on SO FAST! He's never had an issue with the anal glands before, and he had been eating fine up until the day before it happened.

Even worse --- the tech screwed up my prescriptions when they released the dog. Told me an antibiotic pill was a pain pill and sent us home. I found out today that I never received the pain pills, so Bubba has been dealing with recovery from surgery with absolutely NO pain meds. I was so angry and upset at the thought of my elderly dachshund dealing with that kind of pain since Saturday!! The pain meds are a narcotic, so I'm thinking that it wasn't an accident. I was charged for them, I just never received them. And the tech led me to believe that the other pill was a pain pill. Hmmmm.

That is gross. I am glad Sonnie hasn't had that problem. My friend has a 1 year old bloodhound. She is scared of everything. When they try to trim her nails she lets hers go... very gross
