I would say if it was free it is definitely a joke. But I once investigated primates , just out of curiosity. They range in price from $3000-6000. Only some states allow them as pets and you have to have a liscense.

You have to have a federal license to sell primates. You do not have to have a federal license to give them away.

It's also dependant upon species, because--aside from endangered species--some of them can carry diseases that are communicable to humans. I think Macaques are the big worry, actually...

Yeah, I thought you had to have a permit in some states to own them as well. Our old neighbors had monkeys back in the 70s. That was before I was born but another neighbor said they were sure nasty...

Although I think they are cute, I would never really have a monkey of any kind. My cousin, who lives in Puerto Rico, had a spider monkey. Before my cousin married her husband the monkey was fine. But when they got married she put the monkey in the living room in its cage to sleep, that little thing went WILD. It attacked her husband, bit him on the head and he got like 8 stitches, not to mention the bites on his hands trying to get him off which required stitches also. They found a home for him, but he attacked the people's chihuahua and it also had stitches. They took it back to her and she put him in some kind of home for monkeys. In the end they had to put him to sleep because he was mutilating himself.

I am not apprehensive about a lot of animals, but spider monkeys....

Makes me wonder how many non-human primates I'm gonna see tomorrow.

A local petstore here had a pet monkey... I don't remember what type, but capuchin comes to mind... Think (not sure - haven't been there in ages) the monkey has passed away now, as it was really old... kind of thankful, too, as I'm not a big fan of the store...

I admit that it seems awesome to own a monkey....but I have a really hard time getting over the fact that they are SO closely related to us, and if you don't have a room to keep them in--not a cage--it is definetly NOt okay in my book.

And as for Chimps...that's a straight no. That's one thing I very strongly belive in. Chimpanzees are just....basically us with slightly more simple interests and way more hair. I can only accept MASSIVE zoo enclosures. And I'm not talking giant rooms. I'm talking like San Diego zoo sized.

I just...no. NO no no. So wrong.
