Getting rid of ...

my double macaw cage. I like the size but it just doesn't work in the birdroom on the second story of the house. It limits me too much on cage placement and is a PITA to take outside for pressure washing.

Soooo today at the auction I picked up a beauty of an Avian Adventures cage...

Avian Adventures Grande Playtop Bird Cage

for get this... $175.00. This cage is brand new and the color is ruby red. Not bad for a cage that sells for $650+ on sale.

This cage is my best score yet.

Non-human primates were mentioned in another thread. Well today I saw a six week old capuchin sell for $9500.00. No, that decimal is not misplaced. A 6 day old lion cub was no saled when no one would bid above $2K.

I was surprised at some of the prices birds went for. Some went for way higher than I would have expected while others went for nearly nothing.

What sort of auction WAS that? I'm glad my mom doesn't know of exotic wildlife auctions.... she wants a monkey SO bad, I'm sure she'd sell everything we owned to get one, even though I keep telling her how dangerous they are to own.... She doesn't understand.

It was an exotic auction.

I spent a huge portion of my day talking people out of non-human primates. Too many uneducated peeps around.

There is a lady here who fosters apes. Tonkin apes to be more specific as well as other small ape species. They are quite scary things, huge teeth, very unpredictable and smell quite terrible. I am absolutely clueless as to why someone would want one as a pet. That or a lion cub? What the hell are you gonna do with it? Six days old? Unless you are wise with wisdom on how to care for such a delicate animal, it may not survive. What people will do for money... quite sad. Good deal on the cage Tracy.

When at the auction I have regulations to follow. I can't force my feelings, opinions and values on others. Enforce regulations and educate as much as I can is all I can do.

It is a perty cage isn't it!

So what was the best deal you saw today at the auction. What was the oddest exotic that sold?

IT IS a perty cage... with a really perty price.

The best deal? Well I think that was this cage. :D Seriously though, I pay very little attention to the bidding. Sure the odd price here and there will catch my attention though.

Oddest? Prehensile porcupine was pretty cool looking. The african porcupine is fierce looking though. There was this really cool pair of african cats who's name escapes me. Tiny little things but gorgeous. Coatimundi's, caveys, capybaras, lavender skunks, russian chipmunks, about 8 different non-human primates, kinkajous, and a few others.

This is the smallest auction of the year. The spring one is huge and the animal variety is unbelievable. I saw my first "Tayra" this past spring. I've seen animals here that I've not seen in zoos before.

You can't imagine the number of herps and reps usually present.

Birds are usually present but not nearly as many this time as during the spring or early fall auction. I didn't see any ostriches, emus or rheas this time.

Lots of exotic hoofstock too. Plenty of poultry, fowl and other exotic farm livestock.

People that keep exotics are an interesting group.

There is always equipment at these auctions. Everything from coils or rope to bamboo to cages and incubators. Alot of junk but definitely some gems mixed in.

Cat I never expected the cage to go for so little. Never.

I recently bought the exact same cage and paid close to 700 with shipping. Boo hoo i have so been robbed. You got a great deal, good for you. No auctions around this area.
