Lovebirds "tap" their beaks on various things in their environment for various reasons. Good food is cause for lots of beak rubbing, but I've found most of the beak tapping, which ends up being more like a jailbird running a tin cup along the jailhouse bars, is territorial hen behavior. "It's my cage and just stick your finger in here"

I have both a male and female and though I have notice the female does it a lot more the male also runs his beak along the bars. My Hubby and me did make that comment that it reminded us a jailbird running the tin cup wanting to get out of it's cage. Hehe
