not getting along!

i have had a lutino cockateil for 8 months and a red headed lovebird for 3 months. the cockateil was ine with the budgies i had previously she just watched them and does the same with my love bird but my lovebird will be fine on the couch with her and then run up to her and try to bite her feet or screech at her and try to chase her off the cockateil will just back up and hiss and i intervien but is there a way i can get them to get along they sing to each other in their respective cages but they cannot be out to play at the same time and being a student with a two jobs and 3 other animals to get time in with it would be nice to spend time with both at the same time
also i plan to get a play gym for them and it would be nice if they could use it together thanx

Red headed lovebird??? I'm guessing either fischers or peachface... though behavoir-wise sounds like peachface...

Lovebirds should never be kept with other species of parrots because of their aggressive behavoir. They are often-times known as the "bull dogs of the bird world". Because of their behavoir they have been known to attack and injure, if not kill, other birds. In some cases lovebirds do get along with other species, but they have also been known to kill their own.

Please do not allow the both of them together, as the lovebird could seriously injure the tiel.

Sounds like a mutation of the peachface lovebird...

You shouldn't really allow a lovebird with any other species of bird because they can literally injure another bird. It's just not a good idea any way around it.

I totally agree with Monica. Lovebirds are very aggressive birds. They can be ok when babies, but once they mature they can become killers. Breeders often have problems pairing up birds because they will kill each other. I suggest that you just play with one at a time for safety.

In the nestbox: 3 pair of keets working the box. In the Incubator: 4 dozen duck eggs and some chicken eggs. In the brooder: XL cochins. Will be breeding bourks once I get boxes and I breed keets now, tiels have boxes, but males have no intrest in female and females have no intrest in males.

If you are keeping the cockatiel and the lovebird in seperate cages while in the same room, I would think that you'd be safe. Just moniter the birds closely if one bird is in his cage while the other one is out.

It might seem like you are being overly cautious but lovies can be little terrors. It's not worth risking injury or death of either bird.

Best of luck!

I agree with what every one has said, you simply cannot put a tiel and a lovebird together, tiels are for the most part very docile birds and lovebirds are the opposite. They have been known to bite off a tiels toes.

yeah be careful with that....

My sis has a lovie and i have one too, they can be out in the same room together but if her bird gets close to mine, my Henry will get aggressive and will need to be separated. I dont want her injuring my sis's bird, even tho they are never allowed out together unsupervised. But Henry will attack any other bird that comes too close (or person sometimes) so for your tiels safety its best to let them out separately, considering how docile tiels are in comparision!
