Incubation time is basically the same as "laying to hatching"... Incubation time is approximately 23 days after the hen sits tight. However, some eggs have been known to hatch early, and some even as late as 2 weeks after that time.

Thank You so much. I have raised gloster canaries, gouldian finches, white doves and zebra finches. I have hand raised doves but it has been awhile. I have had and Congo African Grey, Quaker Parakeet,1 pair of female Lovebirds and now have breeding Cockatiels. I lost most of my beloved birds to a house fire in the 90's and am just getting my nerve up to starting again.

Incubation period for Lovvies
Hello, lovvies generally start to hatch out at 20-23 days, depending on ambient temperature and humidity that MUST be a minimum of 65 percent to ensure that egg binding doesn't occur. Something else that you need to do about 12 hours after the first egg hatches.. gently roll baby and look at the crop to be sure the parents are feeding it. I suggest that you begin to feed the birds (the parents) fresh chopped greens like Kale, turnip greens, collards, 12 grain bread pieces, many small pieces of cut carrots,, like frozen (thawed) peas & carrots, or mixed veggies... also it would be good to hard boil an egg,for a minimum of ten minutes, and shred it up and sprinkle on the veggies... also small pieces of well cooked ground beef or well cooked chicken... you can save the broth and some of the flesh for meat.
Peanut butter, (chunky stuff) is best. spread on the 12 brain bread pieces. Oh, the birds MUST get a minimum of 45 minutes of unfiltered sunlight every 3 days - or 4 drops of cod liver oil mixed into a tiny piece of the peanut butter and mix it up.. and spread it on a tiny pieceof the whole grain bread, I do not think its wise to take the birds out or handle the kids UNTIL they're about two & a half weeks old, by then you can buy KAYTEE powder baby food and syringes like from a dentist so you are prepared to hand feed them.. you MUST learn that from someone experienced. Best wishes for you!!! Ginger |

how long till hatch
Monica is right about 23 days, but it is 23 days from the
lay of each egg. She may not sit tight right away and that is where the extra few days can come in. I have found several of my hens will hatch one in the morning and a 2nd in the P.M.

I've actually always read that it's ABOUT 23 days after incubation has began... not after they've laid... I've never bred lovebirds, I've never successfully bred budgies, just bourkes... but I can't recall specifics on the bourkes since it was years ago...
I've read it's always after incubation, because without incubation, the eggs wont start to form (at least not very much)... and if the hen doesn't start incubating until she's got 3-4 eggs, then the eggs are more likely to hatch with 1-2 on the same day, or at least 1every day... thus there will not be a huge difference in the chicks as if they were to hatch every OTHER day....

Yes, it is 21-23 days from the beginning of incubation, not being laid. with that said, if you have a hen that sits well from the first egg she lays, then it would be 21-23 days from the day that hen laid and sat.
I have successfully bred peachfaces for the past 5 years and each hen is a bit different. some sit tight from the first egg being laid while others wait until they have 2-3 eggs.

I agree, sometimes you could get three chicks at the same exact age, which means that the female wait for the third egg before she start laying, while some others get a hatched chick every two days, which mean she started to laying since the first egg.
