territorial

my lovebird has a split personality when we went upstairs today to have a bath and play he sat nicely and did not bite or scream or anything her was well behaved and even left the cockateil alone when told to but when we came back downstairs he instantly bit me not hard but just enough to know that he did i think it is because he wanted to go back to his cage and ate but when we are downstairs all he thinks about is getting back into his cage and he will bite struggle and everything to get there but when he cannot get there he is a good little fellow is there anything i can do to make him stay with me when his cage is nearby because this is the first time i have handled him for more than 2 seconds without getting bit and it makes me sad to have not gotten to know him better because he is so sweet
does the fact that when i got him he was going through puberty have anything to do with it and now he is not he is about 9-10 months old now and very smart and a joy to be with until he bites you hard

Lovebirds normally enjoy their cages a lot because thats home and a safe place to be. They may very well be territorial over it and want to go to it immediatelly... If need be, try moving his cage (or both cages) into a smaller room and then taking them out frequently away from the room... maybe even look into a couple play gyms for them to come out on. This way, he can be out and about but wont be able to get to his cage.

Are you sure your lovebird is male? Hens tend to be more cage protective and bite more in the presence of their cage. You might try leaving the cage door open, as long as it is safe for your lovebird to come out and go in the cage when they want.
Definitely keep working with your lovebird....obviously, the further away from the cage the better. Sometimes progress is slow, but be patient...even with the band aids on your fingers.

I have a female that loves her cage and will protect it at any cost. she is so sweet outside the cage. Maybe your birds is female? Did you have DNA testing done?
